EXCLUSIVE: ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Local authorities in Florida are responding decisively to the Trump administration’s directive to address illegal immigration. This response entails a close partnership with federal immigration agencies, enabling the apprehension of illegal immigrants through coordinated operations.
Fox News Digital recently observed this collaboration in action by accompanying the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office (SJSO) during their operations. The county’s task force works in conjunction with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Border Patrol agents, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to arrest undocumented immigrants and dismantle human smuggling networks as well as sex-trafficking operations.
The task force, led by Sgt. Bobby Kukar, consists of roughly 20 to 25 local, state, and federal law enforcement officers. These individuals conduct weekly operations that target the Interstate 95 corridor, a key route for those moving illegally through the area.
Fox News Digital has previously reported on the SJSO’s collaborative efforts with immigration officials. These operations are pivotal to the county’s initiative to enhance public safety while ensuring the enforcement of immigration laws.
During a recent operation, the task force encountered a broken-down Dodge Ram truck at a stoplight within St. Augustine. The vehicle contained two individuals, aged 19 and 24, who were identified as illegal migrants from Guatemala. This highlights how local law enforcement can identify and act upon instances of illegal presence within their jurisdiction.
One of the individuals, Alexander Aguilar Velasquez, 24, was apprehended by Border Patrol Chief Patrol Agent Matthew Zetts. He was subsequently transported to the ICE field office in Jacksonville. The younger individual was released by immigration authorities and provided with a court date, demonstrating the varied outcomes of these encounters.
According to immigration officials, Velasquez had previously interacted with ICE multiple times and had failed to attend a scheduled court date after his initial crossing. Consequently, he received a final order for removal. This case serves as an example of recurring issues with undocumented immigrants failing to comply with legal processes.
The situation in St. Johns County sheds light on the emerging relationship between local and federal officials, particularly as the White House pushes for measures to mitigate illegal immigration. Sheriff Hardwick has openly conveyed that under his leadership, the county remains committed to prioritizing public safety through this enhanced collaboration.
The SJSO has operated a task force for over a year, but activity has intensified following the election of President Trump, who focused on immigration enforcement as a key part of his platform. The sheriff’s office is part of the 287(g) program, which allows ICE to delegate certain immigration responsibilities to state and local law enforcement agencies.
Every Friday at 2 p.m., the task force holds meetings with federal, state, and local partners to discuss high-priority criminal aliens—those officially wanted in Florida or the surrounding area. This structured approach enhances day-to-day operations and ensures that all agencies are on the same page.
