A Florida woman faces serious charges after allegedly deceiving a man out of thousands of dollars during a fraudulent tarot card reading and supposed spiritual cleansing.
Carmen Valdez De Miguel, 67, was taken into custody following an investigation that revealed a sequence of elaborate scams. Authorities reported that Valdez De Miguel presented herself under the alias Maria Rodriguez and employed manipulative tactics to extract large amounts of cash from her victims.
The incident unfolded on March 11 when the victim discovered a flyer advertising tarot card readings on his car. Intrigued, he called the provided number and arranged a reading for a modest fee of $20.
Two days later, the victim arrived at Valdez De Miguel’s apartment for the session. It was during this meeting that she purportedly informed him he required an extensive spiritual cleansing, a service priced between $600 and $700. Trusting her words, the victim agreed to make a partial payment, sending her $200 via Zelle.
On March 14, the victim returned for the spiritual cleansing ritual he had partially paid for. During this session, Valdez De Miguel inquired about his bank balance. When he disclosed he had around $8,000 at his disposal, she suggested he bring the full amount on his next visit.
She assured him that investing this money in a ritual would double it by the end of the day. Swayed by her promises, he returned on March 19 with $3,000 in cash.
Upon his return, Valdez De Miguel instructed him to place the cash in a bag with eggs, claiming this was part of the ritual. However, during the process, the bag broke open, revealing nothing but shattered eggs and worms. The victim, realizing he had been tricked, requested his money back, but Valdez De Miguel insisted she couldn’t return it because of her “state of mind.”
Moreover, she guaranteed that the money would be returned the next day. Unfortunately, multiple attempts by the victim to get his cash back were met with Valdez De Miguel’s refusal. She argued that the money was essential to the ritual and could not be retrieved until certain candles extinguished.
On Monday, law enforcement apprehended Valdez De Miguel, who was reportedly uncooperative during her arrest. Officers offered her a chance to refund the victim, but she denied knowing him. Moreover, investigators revealed that she had three outstanding warrants related to separate theft incidents.
After her arrest, Valdez De Miguel appeared before a judge on Tuesday. The judge set her bond at $5,500. During her court appearance, Judge Mindy Glazer expressed disbelief at the bizarre circumstances of the case. She remarked on the peculiar choice of asking someone to bring $3,000 in cash and to place it in a bag with eggs.
This incident underscores a troubling trend in Florida, where individuals seeking spiritual guidance have become targets for similar scams. Unscrupulous operators often exploit the vulnerable, using deception under the guise of spiritual cleansing and other practices. The rising number of cases has prompted authorities to issue warnings about the dangers associated with these types of scams.
Experts urge the public to exercise caution and skepticism when approached by individuals who promote services related to fortune-telling or spiritual healing. They recommend verifying credentials and seeking out reputable practitioners rather than trusting flyers or unsolicited offers.
In light of these events, local law enforcement and community organizations are stepping up efforts to educate the public. Initiatives aim to provide resources and support to those who may be vulnerable to such scams. Workshops and seminars are being organized to raise awareness regarding common tactics used by scammers and to empower potential victims to protect their assets.
Law enforcement continues to investigate Valdez De Miguel’s activities, and her case may lead to further inquiries surrounding similar scams in the area. The public remains encouraged to report any suspicious activities or similar incidents to authorities to prevent others from falling victim.
This unsettling case of Carmen Valdez De Miguel serves as a cautionary tale. Individuals seeking guidance through tarot readings or spiritual services must approach the situation with discernment and vigilance. The promise of quick wealth or solutions to personal issues can often mask dangerous entrapments.
As this case unfolds, one thing remains clear: trusting blindly can lead to devastating financial consequences. Awareness and a critical mindset are essential tools in safeguarding oneself against such deceitful practices.
