FIRST ON FOX: Two residents of Michigan face serious charges in connection with a foiled terror plot aimed at executing a mass shooting during Halloween festivities in a Detroit suburb. This alarming information comes from an FBI affidavit detailing the alleged conspiracy.
Mohmed Ali, a 22-year-old from Dearborn, and 20-year-old Majed Mahmoud have been charged for their roles in planning a mass shooting under the codename “pumpkin.” The charges include receiving and attempting to transfer firearms while knowing they could potentially be used for terrorism.
Reports detail that Ali frequently practiced shooting at a local gun range alongside Mahmoud and a juvenile identified only as “Person 1” and nicknamed “Athari.” They were also joined by another suspect known as “Co-conspirator 4” during some of these sessions, according to the court documents.
The development of this case intensified after a lawyer representing one of the accused, arrested on Friday, expressed to The Associated Press that there was no real plot and expressed surprise at the charges being filed.
During conversations intercepted by law enforcement, the unnamed juvenile suspect voiced that the attack needed to be executed on Halloween. He reportedly communicated with Ali, stating, “So ya, I talked to my brothers. We are going to do pumpkin. I talked to… [Co-conspirator 4] and [Co-conspirator 5], they said it is getting bad. So we got to do pumpkin, ya.” Such statements raise significant concerns about their intentions.
Before any attack could take place, federal authorities executed search warrants on the homes of both men and a storage facility in nearby Inkster. They recovered an arsenal that included three AR-15-style rifles, two shotguns, four handguns, and over 1,600 rounds of ammunition. Additionally, investigators found various items, such as tactical gear and GoPro cameras.
FBI Director Kash Patel emphasized the importance of the agency’s timely intervention, stating, “With today’s unsealed criminal complaint, the American public can witness the results of months of diligent investigative work. The FBI acted swiftly and likely saved many lives.” He assured that the agency would continue to uphold the law and justice for the American people.
The alleged conspiracy reportedly began on September 1, with the group intending to launch their attack on Halloween. The charging documents reveal that they did extensive reconnaissance, scouting potential sites in Ferndale, Michigan. This suburb, located just north of Detroit, is recognized for its vibrant LGBT nightlife, adding a chilling context to their intended targets.
This reconnaissance raised suspicions among investigators, especially since none of the primary suspects were older than 21.
Ali and the juvenile suspect Athari allegedly referenced a notorious terrorist attack in France, hinting that their intentions mirrored the coordinated assault executed by ISIS-affiliated terrorists in November 2015, which tragically killed 137 individuals and injured over 400.
One of the unnamed co-conspirators met with Ali and Athari during the summer before traveling abroad. Upon his return, Customs and Border Protection agents searched his phone and reportedly found searches related to ISIS and selfies depicting him in tactical gear while holding firearms.
Despite ISIS’s military defeat in 2019, the group still operates as a formidable terror network, as outlined in the criminal complaint. The accused conspirators allegedly shared Islamic extremist materials on platforms like social media, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Discord. They sought advice from the parent of a well-known local extremist ideologue, affirming their commitment to executing the planned attack on Halloween.
Both Ali and Mahmoud possessed legal means to acquire firearms, and investigations uncovered multiple transactions revealing extensive purchases spanning handguns and their modifications. The complaint detailed their acquisition of a Beretta A300 Ultima Competition shotgun, a Daniel Defense M4 V7 rifle, and various models of 5.56 rifles. Additionally, they procured a Sig Sauer 9mm pistol, alongside an order of more than 1,600 rounds of 5.56 ammunition that was directed to Mahmoud’s address.
The chilling details of this foiled plot reveal a disturbing trend in which extremist ideologies continue to threaten public safety. While authorities acted decisively to prevent this attack, the ongoing investigation underscores the persistent risks posed by individuals and groups attracted to extreme beliefs.
The situation highlights the urgent need for continued vigilance and comprehensive strategies to counter violent extremism. As the FBI investigates further, the community remains on high alert, recognizing the thin line between potential ideology-based violence and community safety.
