Former ABC News Correspondent Acknowledges Trump Bias in Newsrooms

In a recent admission, former ABC News correspondent Terry Moran stated that his long-time employer harbors a bias against President Donald Trump. He attributes this bias to the lack of viewpoint diversity within the newsroom, which he describes as being predominantly filled with like-minded liberals.

Moran, who dedicated nearly 28 years to ABC News, was let go from the network in June following his critical comments directed at Trump and White House aide Stephen Miller on social media. He is currently sharing his insights on Substack, where he recently discussed the future of CBS News. His commentary coincided with FCC Chairman Brendan Carr’s remarks that emphasized the need to root out bias in news reporting, especially in light of a forthcoming merger.

Reflecting on his career, Moran wrote, “Let’s talk about bias. I worked at ABC News for almost 28 years, and I’m proud to say that. But were we biased? Yes, almost inadvertently, I’d say. ABC News has the same problem many leading cultural institutions do in America: a lack of viewpoint diversity.”

Reflections on Diversity at ABC News

Moran pointed out that when he started at ABC News, the organization was predominantly run by white men. Over the years, the Disney-owned network endeavored to enhance diversity within its ranks. However, Moran argues that one significant area where the network failed to diversify was in the political representation of its staff.

He noted, “It is no secret. There are hardly any people who supported Donald Trump at ABC News.” Moran insisted that this absence undoubtedly influenced the network’s coverage of Trump and his policies. According to him, the bias was not outright malevolence but rather a form of ignorance stemming from a disconnect with a substantial portion of the population.

The Disconnect in News Coverage

Moran explained, “The old news divisions don’t hear many of the voices of the country because those voices aren’t in the newsroom. Yes, news teams may go out with a microphone and a camera to engage with people at Trump rallies; however, that often comes off as oddly anthropological and inadequate, a bit like trying to understand nature by visiting a zoo.”

In a compelling personal reflection, Moran shared that, despite being dismissed for his outspoken criticisms, he played the role of a devil’s advocate within ABC News. He sought to encourage his colleagues to consider perspectives that aligned with Trump supporters.

“Inside the newsroom, I had a reputation for trying to get colleagues to understand the other side, to empathize with the supporters of MAGA, and to recognize the democratic forces that solidified Donald Trump as a significant political figure in our times,” Moran elaborated. “Thus, it is clear that, from my viewpoint, traditional news networks display a notable bias.”

Reactions to Moran’s Departure

ABC News representatives were unavailable for immediate comment regarding Moran’s claims. However, the circumstances surrounding his dismissal have drawn considerable attention, particularly as it occurred shortly after he had a contentious interview with Trump during a prime-time special focusing on the President’s first 100 days in office.

Following his critical remarks about Trump and Miller, which he labeled as “world-class” haters, Moran was let go from ABC News just prior to the expiration of his contract.

Moran articulated his perspective by stating, “The thing about Stephen Miller is not that he is the brains behind Trumpism. He conceptualizes the impulses of the Trumpist movement and translates them into policy. Yet, what’s especially notable about Miller is not his intellect; it’s his deep-seated animosity.”

He described Miller as someone who is profoundly capable of hatred, remarking, “He is a world-class hater. This can be observed just by looking at him, as his hatreds become his lifeblood. He consumes his hate.”

Moran’s post further characterized Trump as a world-class hater, asserting that his hatred serves merely as a catalyst for his personal glorification.

Mixed Reactions from ABC News Staff

An ABC News employee shared insights with the media, stating that while Moran was widely respected and cherished among his peers, the comments that led to his termination painted a misleading picture of him as an extreme liberal. The staffer emphasized that despite the controversy, Moran was not the stereotypical
