A recent video featuring six Democratic lawmakers encouraging U.S. military personnel to reject unlawful orders has ignited significant controversy. President Donald Trump criticized the video as an act of seditious behavior, highlighting its potential to stir unrest within the armed forces.
Former U.S. Army Captain Doug Truax, who founded Restoration of America, shared his concerns with Fox News Digital. He emphasized that the video poses a real threat to the military’s chain of command and could escalate political tensions nationwide.
Truax characterized the video as one of the most unpatriotic acts he has witnessed throughout his lifetime. He expressed that undermining the chain of command could lead to chaos as troops might start questioning orders based on morality rather than legality. This shift, he argued, is unjust to service members who already face challenging responsibilities and prefer to remain apolitical.
The controversial video, which gained significant traction online, featured Senators Elissa Slotkin from Michigan and Mark Kelly from Arizona, as well as Representatives Chris Deluzio, Maggie Goodlander, Chrissy Houlahan, and Jason Crow. Each of the featured lawmakers comes from a military background, which adds further weight to the debate surrounding their message.
In the video, these lawmakers assert that military members have the right and duty to refuse illegal orders, a fact Truax pointed out is already known to service members. He criticized what he perceives as the blurring of critical lines by political figures.
Truax argued that by implying service members could evaluate orders’ legality based on personal judgments, the lawmakers create significant apprehension and confusion among those on the ground. He firmly stated that the integrity of the military chain of command is paramount, warning that its breakdown could lead to widespread disorder.
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth echoed these concerns, explaining that vague rhetoric can undermine trust and cohesion within the military. He underscored that the military already provides structured channels for addressing unlawful orders and does not require external parties to introduce uncertainty into established protocols.
Truax pointed out that the lawmakers’ military experience intensifies the video’s negative impact. He argued that they should understand the potential repercussions of their statements, suggesting that their actions are driven by a desire to maintain political power as the nation trends more conservative.
He also expressed unease about the volatile political climate, referencing instances of political violence, including attempts on public figures’ lives. He warned that fueling divisions within society, particularly in military contexts, could have grave consequences. According to Truax, most Americans would agree that promoting such a message during these times is detrimental.
Truax criticized the lawmakers harshly, labeling their actions as a sophisticated form of political agitation akin to Antifa. He articulated concern that such maneuvers would further erode national unity.
Despite recognizing that active duty service members might remain largely unaffected by this controversy, Truax voiced apprehension about the National Guard and reservists. He asserted these groups could face real difficulties in real-world scenarios when confronted with lawful orders.
Truax cautioned against politicizing the military, drawing parallels to the treatment of soldiers returning home from the Vietnam War. He recounted the painful legacy faced by veterans who returned from a contentious conflict only to endure criticism for their service.
He shared a personal anecdote regarding his father-in-law, who served in Vietnam and earned a Purple Heart. Truax’s father-in-law faced significant challenges upon returning home, highlighting the long-lasting impact of societal backlash on veterans.
Truax concluded by stating the urgent need to protect service members from political exploitation. They should never bear the weight of difficult decisions that could result in public criticism upon their return from duty. It is crucial that American society honors its troops properly and provides them a supportive environment upon their reintegration.
As the debate continues, the implications of political rhetoric on the military remain a pressing concern. The strong reactions from both sides demonstrate the need for careful consideration of the military’s role in a divided political landscape.
