Former MLB Star Tom Gordon Reflects on His Journey and Stephen King’s Novel

Tom “Flash” Gordon boasts an impressive athletic career, highlighted by a remarkable 21-year tenure in Major League Baseball. He earned three All-Star selections and set a then MLB record by achieving 54 consecutive saves.

Beyond his achievements on the field, Gordon became a subject in literature when acclaimed author Stephen King wrote a novel titled “The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon.” A devoted fan of the Boston Red Sox, King frequently visited Fenway Park to observe Gordon during his games.

In a recent interview, Gordon shared insights about his relationship with King, revealing that the author and his wife Tabitha attended games to scrutinize his performance. “Stephen King, this great author, his wife (Tabitha), they’re coming to the ballpark every single day,” noted Gordon. “I didn’t know they were watching everything I did, sitting there to see if I was the right guy for this moment. Eventually, it turned out I became that guy for the story.”

King and Tabitha traveled to Gordon’s hometown, where they met him at a local restaurant named Olympic Restaurant. There, Tabitha expressed her conviction that Gordon was perfect for the book. Gordon recounted, “Stephen told me, when she said that, there was no other person we were considering besides you, my friend.”

During their discussions, Gordon wondered what made him the chosen subject for King’s novel. He recounted asking King, “Why me?” King’s response highlighted his admiration for Gordon’s approach to the game. “He said there was no better guy to do this with because we liked how you approached the game. I approached the game the same way I did as a kid,” Gordon recalled.

For Gordon, it was crucial to cultivate a sense of camaraderie and sportsmanship throughout his career. He expressed, “I wanna be the guy that, at the end of the day, received a handshake from the player who said, ‘Hey guy, we won that game.’ For me, it was never about individual glory, but rather about the team’s success.”

The timing of King’s book coincided with significant milestones in Gordon’s career. He transitioned into the closer role at a moment when things were falling into place both on and off the field. Recounting his conversation with manager Jimy Williams, Gordon remembered being taken aback when Williams said, “Flash, you could close games. You really can.””>

Despite sharing the field with legendary pitcher Dennis Eckersley, Gordon embraced the challenge of closing games. He said, “When Jimy made me the closer, Eck approached me and reaffirmed my capability. He believed in me and reassured me that I was indeed the guy to finish the games.”

Eventually, Gordon set an MLB record for consecutive saves, a remarkable feat that heightened his profile and contributed significantly to his legacy. “Every single time, I had my family with me. I reeled off 54 saves in a row, and my teammates were proudly supportive during that period. It was something truly special,” he shared.

Gordon also revealed the profound impact of King’s book on his local community. He expressed gratitude, stating, “When Stephen did that, it sent shock waves through my life and my community. He came to my hometown, visited my high school with his wife, and signed autographs. Families bought the book, and it was an unforgettable experience for everyone. It’s a moment I will always cherish. I’m grateful to have met such remarkable people like Stephen and Tabitha King.”

Becoming part of King’s novel brought unexpected benefits to Gordon. He laughably recounted, “You know, after it all happened, I started showing up at the games thinking that every girl in the stadium would like me. This is awesome! Not a single woman in those stands would boo me!”

Reflecting on his life, Gordon described it as nothing short of amazing. He acknowledged a higher power, saying, “I just gotta give God his credit.”

In his post-baseball career, Gordon maintains a strong presence in the game as an influential figure with Perfect Game, the largest scouting organization in its field. He is preparing to launch his upcoming podcast titled “Innings of Life,” which will showcase interviews with current and former baseball players, as well as managers and executives. An innovative aspect of his podcast is that he travels across the country in an RV outfitted with a custom podcast studio to conduct these interviews.

Through his experiences, Gordon has continued to inspire others, blending his passion for baseball with storytelling. His story reflects the extraordinary intersections of sports, literature, and personal growth.
