The National Football League continues to broaden its international footprint, with a milestone game taking place this weekend in Spain.

The Miami Dolphins and Washington Commanders are set to compete in Madrid, marking a historic first for the league in this vibrant European city.

For Alejandro Villanueva, this game resonates on a personal level. Having grown up in Spain, he has deep ties to the country, where his father works at Naval Station Rota. Wednesday saw him involved in a flag football event organized on the military base. The former NFL offensive lineman, who also served in the military, is in Spain representing USAA, the NFL’s official partner for Salute to Service.

“The United States military and the country of Spain have shaped my upbringing in significant ways. I have always hoped for a strong relationship between Spain and the United States, as any tension between the two would put me in a difficult position. Witnessing an American football game taking place in Spain is truly surreal,” Villanueva shared in a recent interview.

Villanueva elaborated on his experiences, highlighting how he has witnessed the evolving relationship between Spain and the United States. He emphasized the importance of the military base to the U.S. Navy and remarked on the growing interest in American football among Spanish fans. “Returning to my hometown, engaging with troops, and communicating on an American base in English is an incredible experience,” he said.

Joe Theismann, another NFL alumnus present in Spain, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Being here at the base today felt unbelievable. It’s wonderful to see USAA honor the military through actions like this. I attended the Army-Navy game last year and now I have the opportunity to honor our troops again here in Spain.”

Theismann underscored the importance of expanding the NFL’s global reach. He believes that as long as venues are filled, the league should continue to forge connections across the Atlantic.

“The packed stadiums at international games reflect the unquenchable appetite for the NFL. If fans weren’t interested, these games wouldn’t happen. Yet, every game draws enthusiastic crowds with fans sporting jerseys, banners, and painted faces. The enthusiasm around the globe matches, if not exceeds, the energy found in sports fans back in the States. The NFL is making significant strides in building its brand,” Theismann remarked.

Villanueva agreed but approached the discussion from a different angle. He described American football as a cultural force capable of bridging gaps between the United States and Spain.

“Players embody stories, and those stories convey values that resonate universally. American football represents dedication and sacrifice above all. It’s irrelevant where a player starts; their hard work and perseverance determine their fate in the NFL. These values are inherently American, yet they are universally admirable,” Villanueva explained.

According to him, American sports serve as a powerful medium of entertainment and cultural exchange. He noted, “Viewers can gain insights into the values we cherish simply through the lens of American football. While traditional in many respects, the rest of the world could learn much from the American approach to sports. The appeal of American football is undeniable, pulling in viewers weekly on Sunday and Monday nights.”

Villanueva drew a parallel with the British expansion of soccer worldwide, stating, “Everyone can appreciate and become fans of American football, just as the British grew soccer’s global popularity. I sincerely hope the NFL continues to pursue international growth.”

As the NFL expands its reach beyond U.S. borders, the commitment from players like Villanueva and Theismann showcases not only their love for the game but also their dedication to connecting cultures through sport. Their shared experiences highlight the potential of football to transcend borders, strengthening ties between nations through a common passion.

Whether through organized games, fan engagement, or cultural exchanges, the NFL is on a path of significant transformation, creating more opportunities for American football to flourish across the globe.
