A notable former adviser from the Obama campaign has condemned the Trump administration’s recent initiatives aimed at dismantling diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies within the federal government. The adviser equated Trump’s actions to those of a Ku Klux Klan member.
Ameshia Cross, the former adviser, stated during an MSNBC interview, “He doesn’t believe in fairness, and at this point, he might as well just put on the white hood. Every Black person in this country knows the message this is sending and understands exactly what he’s doing when he speaks and implements such regulations.” These remarks came on a day filled with discussions surrounding the implications of Trump’s policy decisions.
Cross’s comments surfaced in response to Trump’s executive order that calls for a formal assessment of Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) hiring practices instituted during the Biden presidency. This order emerged shortly after a tragic incident involving a DC plane crash, which claimed 67 lives when an Army helicopter collided with a passenger jet near Reagan National Airport.
The devastating crash raised questions about the FAA’s DEI policies, with some speculating they may have contributed to the incident. Following the crash, the executive order criticized prior decisions made during the Obama and Biden administrations, claiming they undermined merit and competence in FAA operations.
In a press conference the day after the fatal crash, Trump emphasized the need for high standards in aviation safety. He stated, “We must have only the highest standards for people who work in our aviation system. I changed the standards from very mediocre at best to extraordinary… Safety must come first. Obama, Biden, and the Democrats prioritized policy over competence.” Trump’s statement also included an acknowledgment of the importance of assembling talented teams, regardless of their backgrounds.
Cross accused Trump of using executive orders and rhetoric against DEI hiring practices as a guise for racism. She argued that these actions seek to diminish the progress and achievements of Black individuals in America. According to her analysis, Trump’s anti-DEI initiatives represent a broader communication strategy that has resonated across various states.
She noted troubling trends among colleges and universities that have begun rolling back their DEI programs. Furthermore, many large private sector companies have similarly retreated from their DEI commitments, reflecting a significant cultural shift. For instance, Meta, which owns Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, announced the cessation of their DEI policies earlier this year.
Critics like Cross perceive a more sinister motive behind Trump’s efforts to eliminate DEI initiatives. She expressed concern that Trump aims to limit opportunities for all Americans, stating, “If you let Donald Trump tell it, merit is only found—excellence is only found—in White men.” Such statements underscore the ongoing narrative around inequity and exclusion in American society.
The discourse surrounding DEI policies continues to generate intense debate. As various sectors review their diversity commitments, many voices call for a reassessment of the values these policies represent. The implications of these changes could impact not only federal policies but also broader societal perceptions of equality and opportunity.
