Former Officials Criticize FBI’s Leadership Changes Amid Claims of Political Purge

A coalition of former FBI, intelligence, diplomatic, and national security officials has released a letter condemning FBI Director Kash Patel and Deputy Director Dan Bongino for the recent termination of several bureau agents. The letter alleges these agents were targeted due to a lack of loyalty towards President Trump.

Identifying themselves as The Steady State, the group asserts that Agents Brian Driscoll, Michael Feinberg, and Walter Giardina were dismissed as part of a broader effort to undermine the FBI’s long-standing independence. They accuse the current leadership of converting the agency into a political instrument.

The letter argues that the firings stemmed from the agents’ perceived disloyalty to Donald Trump. The authors express concern that the selection of Patel and Bongino for leadership roles reflects a troubling lack of qualifications necessary to lead one of the world’s premier law enforcement agencies. They emphasize that this is not merely an attempt at reform but a shift toward control.

They warn, “The aim appears to be transforming the FBI from a respected institution into an enforcement arm of a political figure.” The letter further draws parallels with authoritarian regimes that prioritize loyalty to leaders over adherence to the law, suggesting that such dynamics lead to disastrous outcomes.

In their statement, The Steady State emphasized the critical timeframe facing those within the FBI, saying they understand the immense pressure the agents are under.

“The nation is watching, and will find inspiration from the FBI. History will not forget,” the letter concludes.

Recently, the FBI made headlines when it ousted Driscoll, the former acting director, along with Giardina, a special agent involved in the investigation of Trump trade advisor Peter Navarro. Additionally, the bureau removed Steve Jensen, the acting director overseeing the Washington Field Office.

Driscoll had served as acting director prior to Patel’s confirmation, while Jensen played a significant role in investigations related to the January 6 events. Senior FBI officials reportedly instructed the three to vacate their positions by the following Friday.

Despite inquiries from Fox News Digital regarding The Steady State’s claims and the reasons behind the dismissals, Patel, Bongino, and the FBI declined to comment.

Ken Dilanian, a journalist for MSNBC, shared a copy of a letter from Patel to Giardina on social media, which notes, “This document provides official notice that you are being summarily dismissed from your position at the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and removed from federal service under my authority as the FBI Director, effective immediately.” Patel’s letter cited poor judgment and a lack of impartiality as reasons for the dismissals, describing such behavior as leading to the political weaponization of the government.

Former FBI Agent Phil Kennedy, who has been outspoken about the agency’s recent personnel changes, referred to the firings as an FBI purge and shared The Steady State’s letter. In another post, he criticized the terminations, stating, “Walter Giardina, the disgraced anti-Trump Agent, has reportedly been terminated by the FBI,” describing the situation as a
