A Missouri man faces serious charges following a fatal road rage shooting that claimed the life of Dennis Sharkey Jr., a former sports reporter. Authorities have charged Ruslan Huseynov, aged 34, with second-degree murder, armed criminal action, and unlawful weapon use in connection with the incident that unfolded on January 10.
The Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department received a 911 call at approximately 7 p.m. from witnesses driving southbound on Interstate 29. They reported observing a confrontation between Huseynov and Sharkey’s vehicles. The two cars reportedly came to a stop in front of the witnesses’ vehicle, obstructing traffic and escalating tensions.
According to a probable cause statement from Platte County, the witnesses noticed the suspect exiting his vehicle, armed with a firearm. Witnesses later reported seeing him aim the gun at Sharkey’s car before fleeing the scene. As they drove by, they heard a gunshot, prompting them to immediately call for help.
Authorities quickly arrived at the crash site on I-29, where they discovered Sharkey’s vehicle had crashed into a nearby fence. Inside, emergency responders found Sharkey suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite prompt medical attention, he was pronounced dead later that evening at a local hospital.
In the aftermath of the shooting, investigators linked suspicious cellphone data from the vicinity of the incident to Huseynov. Additional evidence including bullet casings discovered near the scene aided law enforcement in establishing a timeline of events. Cell tower records showed that Huseynov’s cellphone was active in the area at the time of Sharkey’s death.
Furthermore, a search warrant executed on Huseynov’s cellphone placed him near the scene and a liquor store on the day of the shooting. This critical data helped law enforcement investigators build a clearer picture of Huseynov’s movements before and after the incident.
After a traffic stop in March, police arrested Huseynov on unrelated charges in June. During this arrest, police questioned him regarding the road rage shooting. In a striking admission, Huseynov identified a picture of a 9mm magazine found in his iCloud account as his own. He claimed a friend had attempted to sell him the weapon.
Law enforcement executed a search warrant at Huseynov’s residence, where they discovered a 9mm firearm, ammunition, and magazine stored in a safe. Testing confirmed that the bullet recovered from Sharkey matched the firearm found at Huseynov’s home.
Following Sharkey’s untimely death, a GoFundMe campaign entitled “Honor Dennis: Support His Mom in Her Time of Need” was established in his memory. The campaign highlighted Sharkey’s role as a beloved son and dedicated caretaker for his mother, who now faces an unimaginable loss.
An obituary shared details about Sharkey’s diverse journalism career, which included contributions to several news publications in Missouri and Kansas. Notably, he co-created the Northland Buzz with his friend Cody Snapp and reported on sports for the North Kansas City School District from 2022 to 2024. Most recently, he served as the sports reporter and photographer for the Platte County Citizen.
Sharkey was known for his passion for sports, especially for local teams like the Kansas City Chiefs and the Kansas City Royals. He also cherished his close relationship with his maternal grandmother and enjoyed gardening.
Ruslan Huseynov is currently detained at the Platte County Detention Center without bond. As of now, public records do not indicate that he has secured legal representation.
This tragic incident underscores the ongoing issue of road rage across the United States. Each year, countless individuals become victims of violent confrontations while navigating our roadways. Advocacy for drivers and law enforcement alike underscores the need for improved public safety and awareness about the dangers of aggressive driving.
While law enforcement continues to investigate, the hope remains that such incidents will prompt legislative and social action to curb road rage and promote safer driving habits among motorists.
