Jack Brewer, a former captain of the Minnesota Vikings, has spoken out against the state’s Democratic policymakers, claiming their decisions are jeopardizing the future of girls’ sports in Minnesota. Brewer states that he feels his family is figuratively ‘held hostage’ by the current legislative environment that enables transgender athletes to compete in girls’ sports teams.
Despite a recent ultimatum from the Trump administration, Minnesota has not taken action to prohibit transgender athletes from competing in girls’ sports. The deadline was set on a Friday, and Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison cited an ongoing government shutdown as the reason for his lack of a substantive response to the Title IX mandate from the federal government.
Brewer, who also captained the University of Minnesota’s football team, expressed his deep concern for his relatives living in the state. He characterized the policies allowing trans athletes to compete in girls’ sports as ‘dark and demonic,’ and emphasized the emotional toll on families eager to see their children thrive in sports.
In a powerful statement to Fox News Digital, Brewer remarked, “I still have plenty of family in Minnesota — nieces, nephews, cousins — and family members who coach high school sports there. My family is being held hostage to these dark and demonic laws. I feel for my little nieces who have dreams of being athletes… for my former teammates who are now coaches and athletic directors across the state. These are my people — that’s why I speak out. I say things they can’t.”
The Trump administration previously determined that Minnesota’s policies breach Title IX protections, highlighting a specific controversy in which a transgender softball pitcher led a girls’ high school team to win a state championship. Other examples cited include transgender athletes participating in girls’ events across various sports including Alpine skiing, Nordic skiing, lacrosse, track and field, and volleyball.
The U.S. Department of Justice has already initiated legal actions against educational institutions in Maine and California for similar infractions. Following this trend, Minnesota may soon find itself facing a DOJ referral when the federal government resumes operations.
Brewer has expressed strong support for Trump’s philosophy, declaring, “President Trump is absolutely right to demand that men stay out of women’s sports. When Congress is back in session, he should cut all federal funding to states that continue this insanity. Minnesota has become the laughingstock of America — the embarrassment of our nation.”
Despite the state’s unclear stance, hundreds of school board members in Minnesota have urged a reversal of policies favoring transgender athletes’ participation in girls’ sports. As of Tuesday afternoon, 280 school board members across 113 school districts had signed an open letter advocating compliance with Trump’s orders, citing privacy and safety concerns for female athletes and potential federal funding cuts as a driving force behind their plea.
Brewer did not hesitate to call out both Ellison and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz for their disregard of the concerns raised by school officials. He noted, “You have hundreds of school board members who have stood against this, yet a governor and an attorney general with that much control are forcing their leftist, satanic ideals on people who want nothing to do with it.” He believes that Minnesota has emerged as a hub of misguided policies, branding it ‘the devil’s den’ and calling for a transformative shift in governance.
Brewer also referenced his Christian beliefs as foundational to his views on this matter. He quoted the Bible: “Jesus said it’s better to have a millstone tied around your neck and be cast into the sea than to harm one of His little ones.” His strong conviction stems from the belief that the nation should align more closely with its historical roots, arguing that it should not promote or accommodate behavior he considers to be immoral, stating that such actions harm the souls of children.
In contrast to Brewer, Ellison responded to the school board members’ concerns by arguing that allowing transgender students to participate in school sports does not inflict harm. He stated, “Letting the very small number of transgender students in Minnesota play on their school sports teams doesn’t harm anyone, but segregating them does.”
Ellison also expressed disquiet over the Trump administration’s threats regarding funding cuts, labeling them unconstitutional. He vowed to prevent these cuts and protect the rights of all students within Minnesota.
In response to the federal intrusion, Ellison has already filed his own lawsuit against the Trump administration. He has claimed a moral and legal high ground, declaring it his responsibility to protect both transgender students and the educational community within the state.
As the debate intensifies around gender identity and athletics, Brewer’s passionate advocacy highlights a deeply personal impact on families and concerns surrounding the future of women’s sports. As the state of Minnesota navigates these complex issues, the voices of its citizens—especially those speaking on behalf of young athletes—will continue to shape the conversation.
