Frank Turek Anticipates Berkeley Event as Free Speech Resurgence

Dr. Frank Turek, a prominent author and the president of CrossExamined.org, recently shared insights with Fox News Digital regarding his upcoming appearance at the Turning Point USA event at the University of California, Berkeley. This event is part of the much-debated “This Is The Turning Point” tour.

Turek, known for his books including the co-authored “I Don’t Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist,” travels the country advocating for Christianity. His efforts span churches, high schools, and secular college campuses. In early 2020, Turning Point founder Charlie Kirk sought Turek’s guidance on effectively engaging students on topics related to Christianity.

Reflecting on their relationship, Turek recalled, “Charlie just wanted to enhance his ability to present evidence for Christianity and respond to questions. He reached out to me because my work inspired him. We have been close friends since that initial contact.” Turek is helping prepare Kirk for the tour, which he began after Kirk’s tragic death in September.

The Berkeley event holds special significance for Turek. He expressed, “If I could attend any one event with him, it would be this one. Berkeley embodies a progressive ethos, and I want to demonstrate that Christianity is a legitimate worldview grounded in evidence.”

The Transformation of Free Speech at Berkeley

Turek raised concerns over the evolving landscape of free speech at Berkeley. He noted the university’s historical role in promoting free expression has transitioned into a climate where dissenting views are often marginalized. Signs around the campus have been observed, stating messages like “Fascists, Zionists, Out!”

“Berkeley in the early 1960s was pivotal in advocating for free speech on campuses across the nation. Now, it seems some on campus want to stifle that very freedom,” Turek stated. He highlighted the irony in a place that prides itself on inclusion and diversity now turning against those with differing perspectives.

In response to the posters, Dan Mogulof, Assistant Vice Chancellor at Berkeley, clarified that the posters were unassociated with the university. “These posters, which have been taken down, originate from an outside group with no ties to Berkeley. Our registered student organizations have the right to invite any speaker they wish to campus. We remain committed to ensuring a safe environment for all events held here,” Mogulof said.

Addressing the Accusations of Fascism

Turek addressed criticisms aimed at Turning Point USA, with some labeling the group as reminiscent of fascism. He countered this narrative, arguing that true fascists suppress opposing viewpoints, whereas Kirk and Turning Point encourage dialogue, even with critics.

“It’s not fascism to engage in a conversation. A fascist is someone who resorts to violence, not someone who invites challenges to their beliefs,” Turek pointed out. He emphasized that conservatives generally seek understanding and debate, while many leftists appear to want to silence dissent.

This desire to cancel conversations leads to missed opportunities for learning from one another, Turek asserted. He contended that discussions should encompass all viewpoints rather than stifle them, which fosters a more profound understanding of complex issues.

Encouraging Boldness Among Christians

In light of the current social climate, Turek urged Christians to be courageous in upholding their values and engaging in public discussions. He believes active participation in politics is vital for safeguarding religious viewpoints.

“If you are concerned about expressing your beliefs, you must get involved in politics. The laws made at various levels can significantly impact your ability to speak and live your faith freely,” Turek advised. He encourages Christians to recognize their responsibility to act ethically while trusting in a higher purpose.

As the Berkeley event approaches, Turek remains optimistic about its potential to reignite the spirit of free speech and support open dialogues.

A Call to Action

Turek’s journey underscores the importance of standing firm in one’s beliefs amidst challenges. By promoting discussions that include diverse opinions, individuals can foster an environment that respects all voices, encouraging growth and understanding in a divided society. The upcoming Turning Point USA event represents more than just a gathering; it symbolizes a reaffirmation of the fundamental right to free speech.

With this event, Turek aims not just to advocate for Christianity but also to remind society of the value of open dialogue, tolerance, and the respectful exchange of ideas.
