Terry Moogan’s story begins in the gritty streets of Liverpool, where he faced poverty and hardship throughout his childhood. Before encountering the glitz of Hollywood, he navigated a turbulent youth filled with crime and survival.
A Struggle for Survival in Liverpool
Moogan’s life was marked by challenges. Growing up in a city known for its gang culture, he shared how children like him often found solace in illicit activities. He recalls, “All the kids are tough children in the city, and we all hung around gangs. Liverpool’s got a history of powerful men just coming out of war. We had nothing and didn’t believe in anybody. We had to survive.”
As a boy, Moogan and his friends would steal alcohol from warehouses near the docks and sell it to local pubs. His rebellious spirit led him to skip school and engage in petty theft. By age 16, he was involved in bank robberies, often using his sharp wits to navigate the dangerous world he inhabited.
A Pivotal Change of Direction
The turning point in Moogan’s life came in 1975, when his brother proposed an unexpected opportunity. “I’m absolutely lost,” Moogan recalls. His brother offered him a chance to work on the Queen Elizabeth 2 ocean liner, a move that would ultimately lead him to California.
Finding His Place on the Queen Elizabeth 2
Upon joining the ship’s crew, Moogan felt out of his element. Starting in the galley, he struggled to learn the ropes. However, encouragement from a friend led him to transition from a kitchen worker to a busboy, and eventually to a waiter. This experience, while initially daunting, opened doors that he could hardly imagine.
As fate would have it, Moogan received a promotion to work in the penthouse where the stars stayed. This was where he met the legendary Elizabeth Taylor and her then-husband Richard Burton. Moogan describes their encounter as transformative. “I engaged with Elizabeth Taylor when Richard was downstairs, and she asked me if I had ever thought about being a movie star.”
Words of Wisdom from a Hollywood Icon
While he laughed off the idea of becoming an actor, Taylor’s words resonated with him. “You should at least be a butler in California. They’ll love you there,” she suggested. Her sincere interest in his life sparked a glimmer of hope for Moogan, who had long since abandoned dreams of a better future.
Despite the temptation to steal Taylor’s jewels, Moogan chose to honor her trust instead. “I couldn’t steal from Elizabeth Taylor. She was so beautiful and insightful. My mind began to shift toward redemption, imagining a life I could never have envisioned before.” This pivotal moment shifted his perspective toward a path of integrity and purpose.
The Leap to Los Angeles
In 1980, at 23 years old, Moogan took a bold step and moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career as a butler. “My first job was at Jack Benny’s old house next to Lucille Ball,” he reminisced. Forming a friendship with Ball, he cherished the normalcy of their interactions. “I used to joke with her, and she would make me a cup of tea for our chats.”
Working with Hollywood Legends
Over the years, Moogan had the opportunity to serve several Hollywood icons. In 1982, he began working for Maggie Eastwood, Clint Eastwood’s wife. He observes, “Their home felt like a genuine family environment. Clint was quiet yet present, showing genuine interest in his children’s lives.”
His time with the Eastwoods lasted four months before he transitioned to work for Frederick R. Weisman, a prominent art collector. An embarrassing moment occurred when Moogan played Frank Sinatra’s “My Way” during a house visit, which triggered a humorous yet tense reaction from Weisman, recalling a notorious brawl involving Sinatra.
The Charm of George Segal
From 1985 to 1986, Moogan served George Segal, a charismatic figure he described as charming and lively. “He loved entertaining guests, and his home atmosphere reminded me of the camaraderie I experienced back in Liverpool.” Moogan’s role often included preparing meals, including his notable Irish stew, which endeared him to Segal and his family.
A Grateful Retrospective
In 1992, after many fulfilling years in Hollywood, Moogan chose to retire. Reflecting on his remarkable journey, he recognized the pivotal role Elizabeth Taylor played in his transformation. “I’m a great believer in God now,” he said, expressing gratitude for the direction his life took. “I walked the path of the Lord and consider myself fortunate for the opportunities I received. My life has changed for the better.”
Finding Peace and Purpose
Today, Moogan finds contentment in California, a place that once represented a distant dream. The kindness and encouragement he received from Hollywood legends inspired him to follow a path far removed from his early days of crime. His life stands as a testament to the power of hope and human connection. Through the generosity of a star, Moogan reinvented himself and carved a new destiny filled with gratitude and purpose.
