Tyra Mae Steele is ready to shine on the WWE NXT roster as she transitions from Olympic gold medalist to professional wrestling star. Her recent victory in the “WWE Legends and Future Greats” competition has opened the door for her to enter this exciting new phase of her athletic career.
Steele, previously known as Tamyra Mensah-Stock, made headlines during the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. She won the gold medal in the women’s 68-kilogram freestyle wrestling category, making history as the first female African American and first Black female wrestler to achieve this remarkable feat. Her extraordinary performance garnered her significant attention and admiration from fans around the globe.
Despite this monumental achievement, Steele revealed in a recent interview that her passion for freestyle wrestling began to fade. The thrill that once fueled her competitions diminished, leaving her feeling unfulfilled. Steele noted that the absence of an audience during the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to her diminishing enthusiasm for the sport.
Reflecting on her experiences, Steele stated, “I’m a natural athlete. God gave me a natural ability to just crush people, and I love doing it and enjoy every moment. I had a lot of pleasure in winning the Olympics, but wrestling became more of a chore afterward.” The lack of crowd engagement during her matches impacted her enjoyment, fueling her search for renewed inspiration in another arena.
Steele yearned for the competitive spirit that comes from facing rivals who challenge her. She explained, “Every time I wrestled, whether it was overseas or elsewhere, it felt easy. I thrive on hard work and the struggle that comes with competition. That was the joy I was missing, and that’s why I sought a new direction in my career.”
Feeling stagnated in her Olympic training, Steele became open to exploring different avenues within sports when WWE approached her. In 2023, she finally made her move to WWE, eager for the fresh challenges that awaited her. “When I learned WWE wanted to take me on, I thought, ‘This is going to be a thrilling new opportunity. It feels fresh and exciting,’” Steele shared.
For her, this shift felt more than just career progression. Steele described it as a divine calling, saying, “I feel like it was my calling from God. Being here has been an absolute blessing. I have rediscovered joy in my life through this journey.”
The change has also allowed her to leave behind the strict regiment of weight cutting and embrace a wider range of self-expression. The prospect of showcasing her unique personality in the wrestling ring has been an invigorating factor in her decision to join the WWE.
Steele is enthusiastic about her new path and the opportunity to connect with fans on a different level. “I’m here because I believe I’m meant to be here. I enjoy the fight, and it gives me a fresh start to step into the spotlight as a new person. I want to showcase my energy to a new audience. It’s not just about our history; it’s about seeing me in WWE. It’s going to be epic,” she emphasized.
Following her successful run in the “WWE LFG” competition on the women’s side, Steele is set to fully engage in NXT. She will join a dynamic pool of female wrestlers, all of whom are in pursuit of their own dreams and aspirations. Many of these athletes are on the cusp of advancing to major platforms like Raw or SmackDown, creating a vibrant and competitive atmosphere in the division.
Fans can expect exciting developments as Steele establishes herself in the WWE universe. Her infectious enthusiasm and competitive spirit position her as an athlete to watch. As she embarks on this new endeavor, Steele remains committed to balancing her roots in Olympic wrestling with her budding career in professional wrestling.
With her sights set on success in WWE, Tyra Mae Steele is undoubtedly poised to make significant strides in her new career. Her journey from Olympic champion to wrestling star inspires athletes contemplating similar transitions, showing that new paths can lead to greater fulfillment and joy.
