FSU Community Shows Resilience with Heartfelt Support for Police After Tragic Shooting

A Florida State University student recently expressed her gratitude toward law enforcement following a devastating mass shooting that claimed two lives and injured six others on campus. In a touching display, she presented officers with cookies and a heartfelt note of appreciation.

The Tallahassee Police Department highlighted this gesture in a social media post shared on Monday. The note, delivered by the FSU senior, thanked the police for their bravery during the harrowing incident that unfolded on campus.

“Thank you for risking your life on Thursday, April 17th,” the note read. “As students at Florida State, we are truly grateful for your bravery and courage. Your actions did not go unnoticed. We hope you enjoy these cookies as a small token of our eternal gratitude.”

The sentiment echoed across the campus as many students joined in showing their support for local law enforcement.

A Community United in Gratitude

Police Chief Lawrence Revell remarked on the overwhelming response from the community, stating, “The outpouring of love from the community has been outstanding, especially from the students themselves.” This support became especially evident during the tense moments when a gunman opened fire in the FSU student union last week.

The suspect, identified as 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner, faced swift action from the police. Officers quickly neutralized the threat, ensuring the safety of the remaining students on campus.

While law enforcement worked diligently to secure the area, students took initiative around Tallahassee. Some went to local stores, purchasing cases of water to deliver to officers. Chief Revell noted, “We’ve had cookies, doughnuts, and sandwiches that the students have brought over to say thank you for being there for them.” He emphasized that the support meant even more considering the tragic circumstances that spurred these acts of kindness.

A Taste of Cuban Heritage in Tribute

Further emphasizing community spirit, members of FSU’s Cuban-American Student Association (CASA) visited the Tallahassee Police Department on Tuesday to provide a special lunch. They brought Cuban sandwiches from Habana’s Boardwalk, a local restaurant that pays homage to their vibrant culture.

Maria Carla Gonzalez Paz, CASA’s vice president, explained the team’s motivation to show appreciation. “We just wanted to thank them, and we thought Cuban sandwiches would be a fitting gesture,” Paz said. This culinary choice also served as a tribute to Robert Morales, a Cuban-American restaurateur and FSU graduate tragically killed in the shooting.

Morales was not only beloved by peers but also served as FSU’s dining coordinator. His contributions to the community extended to events like CASA’s annual “A Taste of Cuba,” where he provided catering services. By choosing Cuban sandwiches, CASA aimed to honor his legacy while also demonstrating their gratitude toward law enforcement.

Paz highlighted the universality of the sandwich, stating, “You don’t have to be Cuban to enjoy it. It’s just a delicious combination of ham and cheese with mustard and pickles that anyone can appreciate.” This cultural treat thus fostered a sense of unity among students and officers alike.

Support Beyond Food

The outreach from students did not stop there. CASA planned to deliver another round of Cuban sandwiches to the police department, continuing the tradition of expressing appreciation through food. After their initial lunch delivery, Paz and her peers visited Gordos, a popular Cuban restaurant near FSU, to cherish the memory of Morales.

Paz described how Morales previously participated in CASA’s events, noting how his loss affected the organization deeply. “His passing has touched our entire organization, and we feel it collectively,” she noted.

During a recent campus vigil for the victims, symbolic Gordos cups adorned with candles represented not only memories of those lost but also the love and solidarity shared by the student body.

Acknowledgment of Kindness

Chief Revell expressed profound gratitude for the continued support received from the community. He remarked that the police department’s slogan, “here for you,” resonates deeply with the officers. Their commitment to service and community is unwavering, and the feedback from the students reinforces that bond.

Revell highlighted the significance of these gestures, especially coming from students. Given their budget constraints, their thoughtfulness adds a special layer of meaning. “It means the world to us and shows that they care,” he stated emphatically.

Chief Revell emphasized the broader impact of these gestures, stating, “It just truly means even more to have that outpouring of love and the students’ desire to say thank you.” Such actions reflect the resilience and compassion present within the FSU community, showcasing their unified front in the face of adversity.

Continuing Support for Healing

The tragedy that struck Florida State University has led to a renewed sense of solidarity among students and law enforcement. As both groups process the repercussions of the shooting, these moments of kindness illustrate the strength found in community relationships.

Community members plan to continue providing support and encouragement, understanding that gestures both big and small play a vital role in recovery. Through heartfelt actions and shared respect, the FSU community strives to move forward together.
