Gaza Humanitarian Foundation Defends Its Operations Against Doctors Without Borders Criticism

In the midst of escalating tensions surrounding humanitarian efforts in Gaza, the U.S.-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation has found itself at the center of controversy. Following relentless criticism from the United Nations, the foundation continues to operate, delivering its 155 millionth meal to the people of Gaza on Saturday.

Doctors Without Borders Launches Advertising Campaign

Doctors Without Borders, an organization recognized globally for its medical humanitarian work, has taken aim at the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation through a series of advertisements. These ads, visible in Meta’s Ad Library, specifically targeted the foundation back in August. One striking advertisement stated, “This is not aid. This is orchestrated killing,” while another expressed concern about unprecedented levels of systemic violence during its 54 years of operation.

Allegations of Violence at GHF Sites

The accusations against the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation stem from a statement issued on August 6 by MSF’s General Director Raquel Ayora. In her remarks, Ayora described harrowing accounts from patients reportedly injured near GHF distribution sites. She detailed cases of civilians witnessing “children shot in the chest while reaching for food” and others being injured in chaotic stampedes or violent attacks.

GHF Responds to MSF’s Claims

Chapin Fay, a spokesperson for the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, vehemently rejected these claims, labeling them as “false and disgraceful.” Fay accused MSF of perpetuating a disinformation campaign orchestrated by the Hamas-affiliated Gaza Health Ministry. He emphasized that by spreading these allegations, MSF not only undermines GHF’s mission but also aids Hamas in its operations.

Distribution Site Safety Denied

Fay asserted, “No civilians have ever been shot at any of our distribution sites.” He pointed out that Nasser Hospital regularly issues misleading reports about civilian casualties near GHF locations, solely relying on questionable testimonies. He further claimed that no medical personnel from MSF have witnessed any incident occurring in proximity to GHF’s distribution sites, despite the ongoing conflict.

MSF’s Assertion of Evidence

In response to inquiries about alleged injuries or deaths at GHF sites, MSF acknowledged having documented instances of violence and confusion based on accounts from its personnel and patients at two clinical sites. This suggests a deeper complexity within the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, challenging the narratives both sides present.

Finances and Pressure in the Humanitarian Sphere

MSF has refrained from disclosing how much funding it has allocated to campaigns targeting GHF or addressing issues regarding Israeli hostages taken by Hamas. A spokesperson emphasized that they have faced numerous smear campaigns over the past 22 months that lack foundation and accuracy.

UN Reports on Humanitarian Casualties

Despite the uproar surrounding violence near GHF’s distribution sites, recent data from the United Nations reveals a paradox. The UN documented twice as many deaths linked to humanitarian aid convoys—totaling 576—compared to 259 deaths surrounding GHF operations between July 21 and August 18. Allegedly, the conflict’s toll on civilians continues to escalate, complicating relief efforts.

GHF’s Past Support to MSF

Amid these heightened tensions, GHF had previously extended its support to MSF. In early August, GHF offered assistance to MSF for safeguarding their medical aid from adverse conditions. Despite their rivalry, this inter-organizational collaboration highlights the intricate nature of humanitarian work in war zones.

Reports of Medical Negligence

Fay claimed that when GHF staff arrived at Nasser Hospital after a Hamas attack in June that resulted in eight casualties, they were denied medical attention from MSF staff. A written statement from a GHF employee depicted a scene at Nasser Hospital where wounded workers were reportedly not treated, with some even experiencing violence from hospital personnel.

The Need for Collaboration in Crisis

The ongoing violence and lack of medical care have drawn scrutiny from various humanitarian organizations. The Foundation for Defense of Democracies has repeatedly reported on the presence of Hamas fighters within Nasser Hospital. This complicates the narrative surrounding medical care and military activities in conflict zones.

MSF’s Response to Allegations

In response to allegations of negligence, MSF stated it has not seen credible evidence supporting claims that medical care was refused by hospital staff. They also indicated that their personnel had not operated in the emergency department of Nasser Hospital since 2024, raising further questions about the veracity of the various claims being circulated.

New Initiatives from GHF

Despite the ongoing strife, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation recently announced the launch of a new initiative in collaboration with Samaritan’s Purse. According to a statement posted on X, this new program aims to deliver medical care to Palestinians, addressing wounds, injuries, and the needs of expectant mothers.

The Broader Implications for Humanitarian Aid

The situation in Gaza highlights the complexities of providing humanitarian aid amidst political tensions and war. As organizations like GHF and MSF clash over their operations and narratives, the implications for civilian populations are profound. Moving forward, the international community must closely monitor and advocate for humane treatment in these crisis conditions.
