Renowned actor and committed Democratic supporter George Clooney recently reaffirmed his call for a change in the Democratic Party’s 2024 presidential nominee. In a revealing interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper, Clooney articulated that his split from President Joe Biden was grounded in principle.
“It was a civic duty,” Clooney noted, in anticipation of the full interview airing later today. His decision arose from a perception of dishonesty among key figures in his own party.
As a Democrat residing in Kentucky, Clooney understands the dynamics at play. He stated, “When I saw people on my side of the street not telling the truth, I thought that was time to speak up.” His commentary indeed challenges the status quo within the Democratic Party.
Last year, Clooney hosted a prominent fundraising event that amassed over $30 million for Biden’s campaign. However, surprise ensued when he penned a guest essay for the New York Times shortly thereafter, urging the President to consider stepping aside.
While acknowledging Biden’s achievements, the essay raised concerns regarding the potential limitations associated with age. Clooney emphasized, “In the last four years, he’s won many of the battles he’s faced. But the one battle he cannot win is the fight against time.” His words illustrate a growing concern among voters regarding the suitability of candidates.
This reflective piece emerged amidst escalating tensions within the Democratic Party, particularly following Biden’s underwhelming debate performance against Donald Trump. Such events heightened anxiety among Democrats regarding the party’s electoral prospects.
A month later, Biden made the pivotal decision to withdraw from the race and officially endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the nominee for the Democratic Party.
Clooney went on to discuss the palpable shift in Biden’s presence, contrasting the vibrant leader he once knew with the more subdued figure he has observed recently.
“It’s devastating to say it, but the Joe Biden I was with three weeks ago at the fundraiser was not the Joe ‘big F-ing deal’ Biden of 2010. He wasn’t even the Joe Biden of 2020,” he remarked, depicting a stark shift in the President’s demeanor.
During his interview, Tapper commended Clooney for his candidness, labeling it as brave. However, not all within the Democratic establishment share this sentiment. Clooney acknowledged the backlash he has experienced since his essay’s publication but stays firm in his beliefs.
He pointed out, “The idea of freedom of speech is that you can’t demand it and then dictate what people can say about you. You must stand for your principles and accept the consequences.” This underscores the integrity Clooney holds in his convictions.
Despite his prior support for Biden, Clooney expressed backing for Harris, whom he now regards as the party’s incoming leader. He praised Biden’s decision to step back, interpreting it as a move that could ultimately
