Former congressman George Santos has voiced his frustration during a recent CNN interview regarding questions about President Donald Trump’s commutation of his seven-year prison sentence. Santos, who was recently released, firmly rebutted suggestions of favoritism from Trump, indicating that critics will always find a way to express their dissatisfaction.
During the segment on “State of the Union,” CNN’s Dana Bash prompted Santos about the contention surrounding Trump’s decision to commute his sentence. Critics contend that the move illustrated blatant favoritism, given Santos’s unwavering support for Trump.
Bash remarked, “Many people are unhappy regarding the commutation, viewing it as Trump giving favorable treatment due to your loyalty to him.” Santos responded defensively, labeling the critics as “pearl-clutching” and redirecting the discussion to President Joe Biden’s own controversial pardons.
“You know what? I say this, and I hate that we have to go down this road, but there are many people upset with President Biden, who pardoned his entire family in what many see as an unprecedented manner before leaving office. So pardon me if I’m not too focused on the pearl-clutching coming from my critics, especially from those on the left trying to manipulate the narrative,” Santos declared.
Santos further pointed out that Biden also pardoned his son, Hunter Biden, despite previously claiming he would not do so. This maneuver drew public outrage, which Santos argued had not been echoed in his case.
Bash interjected, noting that public reaction to Biden’s actions had indeed highlighted fierce criticism. Santos maintained his stance, dismissing suggestions that his commutation was particularly outrageous.
In addressing the backlash he faces as a result of the commutation, Santos expressed his indifference to criticism. “There will always be critics. Some will support me, while others will oppose me. This is the nature of politics,” he mentioned. He added that if Trump had offered clemency to any other figure, including a symbolic figure like Jesus Christ, there would still be discontent.
Following Santos’s comments regarding Jesus, Bash appeared amused but continued the conversation. Santos expressed gratitude towards Trump for the commutation and shared his Christian faith on social media.
Santos faced legal troubles earlier this year, serving a seven-year sentence after pleading guilty to serious charges of aggravated identity theft and wire fraud. The scandal surrounding his candidacy revealed that Santos had fabricated significant portions of his resume and personal history.
According to reports from the Department of Justice, Santos engaged in unauthorized charges, using stolen credit card information from donors, including vulnerable elderly individuals.
In the 2022 elections, Santos flipped New York’s third congressional district, but his time in office was short-lived; he was expelled less than a year later in 2023 due to his legal issues and the resulting fallout.
The current political climate highlights the complexities surrounding accountability and favoritism. Santos’s situation serves as a focal point in discussions about partisanship and the ways in which different political figures navigate legal challenges.
Fox News Digital reached out to both the White House and a representative for President Biden, seeking comment on Santos’s allegations regarding political favoritism.
