The San Francisco Giants have parted ways with veteran manager Bob Melvin just one day after concluding the 2025 MLB regular season.
Despite exercising Melvin’s 2026 option back in July, the Giants decided to seek a new direction for their franchise.
This season, San Francisco ended with an even 81-81 record, falling short of playoff contention. Although the team enjoyed a late surge with a 13-3 record in August, they faltered in September, ultimately missing the postseason entirely.
Buster Posey, the Giants’ president of baseball operations, addressed the decision on Monday. He stated that after thorough evaluation, the management concluded that a leadership change was necessary for the team’s future. He remarked, “The last couple of months have been both disappointing and frustrating for all of us, and we did not perform up to our standards. We now turn our focus to identifying a new leader to guide us forward. We are just looking to find a different voice that can take us in a new direction.”
In the wake of San Francisco’s season-ending victory over the New York Mets, Melvin had expressed uncertainty about his future, despite the team previously opting to keep him. His tenure with the Giants included a record of 161 wins and 163 losses over two seasons.
The Giants are expected to act swiftly in their search for a new manager. Rumors have already begun to circulate about potential candidates, with Bruce Bochy emerging as a prominent name. Bochy, a former skipper for the Giants, recently completed a successful three-season stint with the Texas Rangers.
Posey emphasized the high standards set for the organization. He noted, “We talked a lot about the standards for the Giants, and we have high standards. I hold myself to those same standards. I understand the position I’m in now. My job and the team’s success are evaluated accordingly. Without a doubt, you hope there can be consistency in these leadership positions.” He added, “We’ve got to get back to a place where we’re getting in the playoffs and making runs in the playoffs. That’s what our fan base deserves, and that’s what the city deserves.”
While Posey did not establish a specific timeline for the hiring of a new manager, he emphasized the importance of making the right choice. He stated, “I want to make sure to get it right.”
Given Melvin’s impressive credentials, he is likely to attract attention from other clubs that may be in search of a seasoned manager. Over the course of his 22-year managerial career, Melvin garnered three Manager of the Year awards in both the American and National leagues. His overall record stands at 1,678 wins and 1,588 losses, having managed teams such as the Arizona Diamondbacks, Seattle Mariners, Oakland Athletics, San Diego Padres, and, most recently, the Giants.
Third baseman Matt Chapman praised Melvin following the announcement. He expressed gratitude for having the opportunity to play for such a steady figure in the clubhouse. Chapman shared, “He’s been steady for us, he’s always honest with the players, and he has our back. He’s done the best with what we’ve given him. A lot of us didn’t play to our capabilities this year, and it’s been a challenging season for sure.”
