World leaders are expressing serious concerns over the sweeping tariffs enacted by President Donald Trump this week, which significantly affect nearly every U.S. trading partner. The administration has introduced a flat 10% tariff on most imports, while certain nations face even steeper charges on their exports to the U.S.
Vietnam, for example, has been subjected to a staggering 46% tariff just one day after lowering its tariffs on U.S. imports. This sudden increase showcases the unpredictable nature of the current trade environment.
No other country feels the impact as severely as China. Trump has placed an additional 34% blanket tariff on Chinese exports, which already faced a 20% tariff earlier this year. Consequently, the total tariffs on Chinese goods imported into the U.S. now reach 54%. This figure is notably close to the 60% Trump promised during his campaign.
In response, China’s Commerce Ministry asserted its opposition to the tariffs, emphasizing that trade wars yield no victors. The ministry indicated it would implement countermeasures to protect its rights and interests.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun echoed these sentiments, warning that protectionism is a path with no escape. He called for fair negotiations between Washington and other nations, including China, to resolve economic and trade disputes.
The European Union also finds itself reeling from these tariffs. It received a blanket 20% tariff, in addition to existing 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum, with car exports to the U.S. also being heavily affected. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the uncertainty created by these tariffs could trigger further protectionism, leading to dire consequences for millions globally.
Von der Leyen confirmed that the EU is preparing countermeasures to Trump’s actions concerning steel tariffs. Moreover, the bloc may take additional steps to safeguard its pharmaceutical and automotive sectors if negotiations do not lead to satisfactory results.
