EXCLUSIVE One of the leading advocates for housing affordability in the House GOP has characterized President Donald Trump’s potential emergency order regarding housing as a potential turning point for the issue.
Mike Flood, the Chair of the House Main Street Caucus and the Housing and Insurance Subcommittee of the House Financial Services Committee, shared insights with Fox News Digital about his hopes that Trump will declare a housing affordability emergency.
Flood explained the implications of an emergency declaration: “When you have a housing shortage and a supply issue, it pushes up valuations, which drives up property taxes. It also increases home insurance premiums because the value of your home rises in the event of a claim.” He added, “The President of the United States indicating that housing is in a crisis and declaring it an emergency – that changes the entire conversation.
On Tuesday, Scott Turner, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), acknowledged that discussions were ongoing regarding this issue, though he refrained from making any definitive statements before Trump.
Turner stated, “Those discussions are being had, not just from an emergency declaration perspective, but also about what we can do to reduce costs and increase supply.” This statement underscores the urgency surrounding the housing crisis many Americans face.
In recent years, home prices have surged dramatically, outpacing wage growth and making even modest homes unreachable for millions of families. Various factors contribute to this crisis, including zoning restrictions, high construction costs, regulatory barriers, and insufficient new home construction.
Furthermore, new tariffs on essential materials such as steel, aluminum, and lumber are expected to raise the cost of building a new single-family home by approximately $10,900, according to the National Association of Home Builders.
Flood emphasized that a concerted effort involving federal, state, and local governments is essential to address these challenges effectively. He noted that his panel is working on bipartisan legislation aimed at fostering nationwide housing affordability, with expectations for progress in October or November.
He asserted, “We have been diligently working within our subcommittee and on Financial Services. I believe we can take significant steps forward and aim for a markup later this year, possibly in October or November.” The urgency surrounding this situation is heightened by the potential impact of a presidential declaration prioritizing housing.
Flood further pointed out that housing affordability has become a pivotal election issue for many Americans. He commented on the economic strain households are facing, saying, “Since 2020, we’ve witnessed 20% inflation, and home insurance premiums are rising. Mortgage rates are higher, and numerous federal program regulations hinder effective assistance from HUD.”
With the potential for Trump to intensify focus on this issue, Flood believes it could resonate with voters. He stated, “The president focusing on this priority will resonate with Americans. This is a topic people are actively discussing.”
