EXCLUSIVE: Representative Darrell Issa, a Republican from California, has put forth a resolution denouncing violence against federal immigration authorities. This move comes in response to a worrying rise in assaults targeting ICE agents.
The resolution argues that ICE and Border Patrol agents are confronting “violent mobs of both citizens and illegal aliens,” who have persistently obstructed and threatened law enforcement. It highlights incidents where these groups have attempted to seriously harm ICE and CBP agents while they perform their lawful duties.
Among the notable incidents cited is a violent attack on Independence Day at the Prarieland Detention Center in Alvarado, Texas. Another alarming case involved a shooting at a Border Patrol annex facility located in McAllen, Texas.
Representative Issa articulated the urgency of his resolution: “This document represents a straightforward inquiry: Do we categorically reject deadly assaults on federal immigration officers or not? I am confident my fellow Republicans support our agents, while it is the Democrats who need to engage in a period of soul-searching regarding their rhetoric that seems to endorse violence against them,” he stated. This resolution is co-led by California Republican Rep. Ken Calvert.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, assaults on ICE agents have surged by a staggering 830% since the previous year. This escalation has sparked intense debate about the appropriateness of allowing agents to conceal their identities while conducting operations, with concerns focusing on doxing and safety of the agents and their families.
In an interview with Fox News Digital, Issa drew parallels between the current anti-ICE movement and a similar movement against police in recent years, particularly in liberal areas and sanctuary cities.
“The broader anti-ICE movement we observe today represents a coordinated effort by the left to undermine law enforcement and jeopardize public safety,” he stated. Issa reflected on the threats posed by criminal organizations like MS-13 and Tren de Aragua, suggesting that this movement seeks to keep communities at risk.
Addressing the implications of sanctuary cities and states, which exist in his district, Issa expressed a commitment to push for the enforcement of federal laws in courts. He noted, “In this situation, we need the federal courts to assert the law, especially as President Trump seeks to enforce the law against the resistance of certain judges. This struggle highlights the tension between law enforcement and judicial authority at the federal level.”
During his comments, Issa pointed out legislative proposals by Democrats aimed at preventing ICE agents from wearing masks and requiring them to visibly display identification during operations. While supporters argue this ensures government transparency and public safety, critics believe it might endanger the agents.
Issa referred to concerns raised by Sen. Patty Murray, a Democrat from Washington, regarding the fear and anxiety that masked agents create within immigrant communities. Murray remarked, “There is a prevailing sense of alarm experienced by residents when they encounter masked individuals claiming to be law enforcement without identifiable markers. It is crucial for anyone detained by law enforcement to know who is taking them into custody and why.”
As the situation evolves, the Trump administration continues to advocate for mass deportations, emphasizing the arrests of individuals with existing criminal records or charges.
Issa lamented the Democratic push in the Senate, suggesting it undermines the protective measures created for federal judges and law enforcement personnel. He asserted, “It is unfortunate that Democratic leaders attempt to dismantle the safeguards designed to protect the identities and residences of those serving in law enforcement,” highlighting that agents risk their safety when required to disclose personal information.
“While we all agree on the importance of accountability for law enforcement, the request for officers to reveal their identities is tantamount to exposing personal information that endangers their families. Such requirements serve no real purpose in the pursuit of safety and transparency,” Issa continued, emphasizing the need to balance accountability with protection.
