The Senate DOGE caucus chairwoman, Joni Ernst from Iowa, has taken initiative to scrutinize recent government reports regarding COVID-19 aid fraud. Ernst is spearheading efforts to diminish what she calls easily-identifiable signals of fraudulent applications for emergency funding.

This week, Ernst highlighted findings from the Pandemic Resources Accountability Committee, which comprises federal inspectors general. The analysis examined nearly 700,000 identity records from 67.5 million applications for relief programs, revealing an estimated $80 billion in potentially fraudulent payouts.

Ernst noted that a significant portion of this fraud could have been avoided if basic verification processes had been followed. These include validating Social Security numbers and matching them against Social Security Administration records to confirm applicants’ identities.

Legislation to Prevent Future Fraud

In response to the concerning findings, Ernst plans to introduce a new bill aimed at addressing such issues of oversight. She believes it’s crucial to implement preventive measures that stop the exploitation of government resources.

The proposed DOGE in Spending Act targets criminals who, during the COVID-19 pandemic, exploited vulnerabilities within the aid systems. The legislation serves as a commitment from Congress to continue the work beyond Musk’s involvement.

Ernst expressed her frustration over the significant losses incurred from preventable fraud, labeling the illicit payouts during the pandemic as unprecedented. Her statements underline the urgency of addressing these vulnerabilities.
