Governor Gavin Newsom of California has publicly criticized prominent universities such as Columbia and Brown for allegedly compromising their integrity in order to secure federal funding from the Trump administration. This sharp rebuke comes after these institutions agreed to substantial settlements aimed at restoring federal research grants that had been previously suspended.
Following a series of sanctions from the federal government, several universities faced cuts or freezes to their research grants. These actions stemmed from accusations of failing to adequately address antisemitism on their campuses or from the promotion of so-called “woke” policies. Some schools decided to pay significant settlements to restore their funding and conclude ongoing investigations. However, Newsom affirmed that the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) will not succumb to these pressures.
“UCLA is not going to sell their soul like Harvard or Brown or Penn or Columbia,” Newsom shared during an appearance on the podcast “Pod Save America”. He expressed his disdain for those institutions’ decisions, stating,
