GRAND BLANC, Mich. – In the aftermath of a devastating incident involving Thomas Jacob Sanford, churches in Grand Blanc, Michigan, are taking significant measures to bolster their security. The attack, which occurred on Sunday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, left four people dead and eight others injured.
Sanford drove his pickup truck into the church, igniting a fire and opening fire on congregants before police confronted and killed him. As first responders rushed towards the scene, many local residents found themselves in a state of shock.
Rev. Jeffrey Heimsoth, senior pastor of Faith Lutheran Church, recounted the chaos experienced by his congregation. They heard the sirens rushing towards the church, located less than a mile away. Simultaneously, some congregants received alarming texts from members of the attacked church, reporting they were hiding in the woods.
In response to the situation, Heimsoth reached out to a trusted church member who is a veteran and firearms owner. He asked him to retrieve a gun from his vehicle as a precautionary measure.
As the service continued, the pastor monitored social media for updates. When he learned that the shooter had been neutralized, he reassured everyone that it was safe to exit the church.
Following the attack, Faith Lutheran Church has implemented a series of security measures, including locking its doors at all times and requiring visitors to be buzzed in. During service hours, two men will be stationed at every entrance to ensure safety. Despite the increased security, church leaders are still deliberating on whether to hire a dedicated security team.
Heimsoth acknowledged the difficulty of safeguarding the congregation. He expressed, “There’s only so much you can do. I mean, he drove a truck into the building.” This reflection highlights the desperate need for effective church security in today’s climate of violence.
Many church members were taken aback, recalling their previous encounters with Sanford. Heimsoth pointed out that his grandchild works with Sanford’s wife, whom he described as a wonderful person.
In a broader context, the increasing frequency of attacks on houses of worship is alarming. A recent report found that assaults against U.S. churches have surged significantly since 2021, spurring communities to rethink their safety protocols.
Rev. Jerry Lasley from St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church shared his church’s approach to enhanced security. Like Faith Lutheran, their doors are now locked around the clock. Lasley has organized trusted congregants to monitor the entrances during services, ensuring that vigilance remains a priority.
However, unlike Faith Lutheran, St. Christopher’s leadership has opted against hiring armed security. Lasley stated his opposition to the notion of paying for armed guards. He mentioned that while some congregation members possess concealed carry licenses, he prefers to remain unaware of their intentions regarding firearms within the church.
“If you bring one, I just hope you know exactly what you’re doing,” Lasley remarked, emphasizing the complexity of the situation.
Both Heimsoth and Lasley have actively sought to extend assistance to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints community during this tragic time. They have offered their church facilities if needed, showcasing a spirit of solidarity amidst the tragedy.
Heimsoth stated, “Our community is just looking to do anything we can to help. We’ve told them that.” In the wake of such violence, the desire to foster healing and unity is crucial.
Heimsoth concluded with a poignant message, reminding all that their mission transcends immediate events. “Our goal is to make sure these people don’t feel like they’re forgotten. Because next week there will be another shooting and everybody moves on. We can’t do that.”
