A previously deported Guatemalan man, with a history of criminal convictions in the United States, was apprehended in New York this past weekend. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, also known as ICE, announced the arrest on Wednesday.
Yoni Wilfredo Gregorio Ortiz, 44, was taken into custody by officers from ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations. His arrest occurred on Sunday in the village of Airmont, located in Rockland County.
When law enforcement authorities arrested Gregorio Ortiz, he had an outstanding warrant for driving while intoxicated, highlighting his disregard for the law.
Gregorio Ortiz’s history with U.S. immigration enforcement began on December 10, 2012, when U.S. Border Patrol agents apprehended him for illegally entering the country. The following day, authorities initiated his expedited removal process, and he was sent back to Guatemala on January 10, 2023.
However, Ortiz reentered the United States illegally at an unspecified time, bypassing any immigration inspections and thereby violating U.S. immigration laws.
William Joyce, the acting Field Office Director of ICE New York City, commented on Ortiz’s arrest, stating, “Not only does Gregorio have contempt for our nation’s immigration laws, as proven by his illegal return after being previously removed, but he has also shown a complete disregard for our criminal laws as well.” Joyce assured the public that ICE will continue to prioritize public safety by detaining and removing illegal alien offenders from communities across the nation.
During his illegal reentry to the U.S., Gregorio Ortiz faced multiple legal issues. He was charged with third-degree assault and subsequently convicted of that crime on September 1, 2022, by the Spring Valley Village Court.
Following the assault conviction, Ortiz encountered more legal trouble. On June 3, 2024, he was convicted by a Rockland County Court for actions detrimental to a child’s well-being and criminal mischief.
Currently, Gregorio Ortiz is in custody at Orange County Jail in Goshen, New York, where he awaits further proceedings by ICE. His apprehension is part of a broader pattern of immigration enforcement across the United States.
Throughout February, ICE has intensified its efforts, resulting in hundreds of arrests. However, authorities report that the total number of apprehensions has decreased compared to previous months. The Department of Homeland Security provided awareness about these trends, noting that arrests hovered around the hundreds daily during the prior month.
Interestingly, under the current administration, ICE has transitioned from releasing arrest numbers daily to providing a monthly summary. Consequently, the specific data regarding February arrests is still pending.
This shift in reporting emphasizes the need for transparency regarding immigration enforcement actions and their impact on communities. As debates around immigration policies continue, the actions of agencies like ICE remain critical to discussions surrounding border security and public safety.
The arrest of Yoni Wilfredo Gregorio Ortiz underscores the complex issues surrounding immigration and crime in the United States. As various government departments assess their strategies, it remains to be seen how the evolving landscape of immigration laws will shape future enforcement actions.
In the interim, local communities will continue to grapple with the implications of these policies. Public safety and community trust should remain paramount in discussions about immigration reform and law enforcement practices.
