Harris County Deputy Shot Outside Family Law Center in Houston, Suspect Also Injured

A Texas deputy was shot on Monday near the Harris County Family Law Center in downtown Houston. The confrontation also left the suspect wounded, according to authorities.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez reported that officers received notification of the shooting incident at approximately 12:30 p.m. The injured deputy, identified as Sheila Jones, was airlifted to Memorial Hermann Medical Center for treatment.

Jones was on duty providing security at the Family Law Center when a violent altercation broke out. Law enforcement officials indicated that as soon as deputies observed the suspect armed, they initiated a pursuit. During this chase, the suspect allegedly discharged his weapon, resulting in Jones being shot.

Following this incident, returning fire from other deputies resulted in the suspect being shot as well. Both individuals were transported to the hospital with injuries. At this time, officials have not confirmed the number of gunshots fired during the altercation.

Fortunately, both Jones and the suspect are anticipated to make a full recovery.

The motive for the shooting remains unclear as investigations continue. Jones, a veteran of the Army, has dedicated 30 years to law enforcement, spending the last two years with the Harris County Precinct 1 Constable’s Office. Notably, her son also serves with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, highlighting a family commitment to public service.

Prior to her role at the Constable’s Office, Jones typically oversaw security matters at the county attorney’s office.
