Gacy, who ultimately faced conviction for the murders of 33 young men and boys in the Chicago area during the 1970s, displayed a disturbing pattern of behavior. O’Neil shared insights from her mother regarding their encounter, stating, “She bumped into John Wayne Gacy the night he took Rob. He wasn’t a nice guy. It almost seemed like he was there with a plan when you reflect on it — and she wasn’t of interest to him. But I do think he was watching Rob, and that’s why he came back later that night.”

In her accounts, Gacy is characterized as a large, overweight man with slightly receding brown hair interspersed with gray. During their brief interaction in the pharmacy, Gacy overlooked Byers, though his gaze seemed fixed on Piest.

A Chilling Evening

On that cold winter evening, Byers borrowed her friend Piest’s blue parka to fill out a film development form. She placed the form into the coat pocket, fully unaware of the impending horror. At the end of his shift, Piest requested his jacket back to take out the trash, but Gacy lingered, seemingly engrossed in observing him while feigning interest in the pharmacy’s products.

Piest had plans for the evening, eager to celebrate his mother’s birthday. Gacy, however, lured him with an enticing summer job offer that paid significantly more than his current minimum-wage position. Intrigued by the opportunity, Piest assured his mother he would return in time for the festivities, unaware that he would never make it home.

O’Neil emotionally reflected, “Rob was taken on his mother’s birthday. I always thought how horrifying that was for her — being a mother — and for the whole family. Rob loved his family and was excited to celebrate with his mom that night. And this one man destroyed everything. My mom saw her friend Rob leave with Gacy that night, and it changed her life.”

Byers received the horrifying news the next day when an officer informed her that Piest had disappeared. O’Neil described her friend as a devoted nature enthusiast with dreams of becoming an Eagle Scout. He enjoyed gymnastics and canoeing, beloved by his family and friends alike. The news of his disappearance struck a devastating blow to his family.

Unraveling the Mystery

When authorities searched Gacy’s home, they unearthed a series of chilling discoveries, including grotesque clown-themed paintings and bizarre décor. Most disturbingly, they found a trap door leading to a crawl space, which would become the site of many of his gruesome crimes. Mix in shocking artifacts, such as a school ring, handcuffs, and a receipt from Nisson Pharmacy, and investigators began to piece together the horrifying puzzle surrounding Gacy.

Byers was subsequently called in to provide a statement, and her film receipt became a pivotal piece of evidence during the investigation. O’Neil stressed how crucial it was for her mother to cooperate with authorities while grappling with the harrowing fear of the situation.

“This was very scary to do at this time,” O’Neil explained. “Being a young woman, her gender and her age were often used against her by authority figures. It wasn’t a time when a 17-year-old’s voice held a lot of weight.”

The receipt bolstered the police’s case against Gacy. While he denied ever meeting Piest, detectives, armed with the evidence indicating he had, intensified their surveillance of him. Ongoing inconsistencies in Gacy’s statements and the developing evidence warranted a thorough search of his property, ultimately revealing buried human remains.

The Aftermath and Reflection

Amid the investigation, Gacy’s well-manicured public persona began to crumble, revealing a very different man underneath. O’Neil pointed out that despite the notorious image of Gacy as a clever serial killer, he often blended into the fabric of his community due to his charisma and manipulative skills. She recounted, “Even when they later studied his brain, there was nothing interesting to be found. It was quite a bland, boring brain.” This observation serves as a caution against glorifying serial killers and emphasizes the danger of romanticizing their lives.

As investigators continued their search of Gacy’s property, they unearthed bodies interred beneath his home. However, Piest’s body was not among them, as Gacy confessed to disposing of multiple victims in the Des Plaines River when he ran out of space to hide them.

Eventually, police divers retrieved several remains from the river. Piest was identified through dental records, establishing him as one of Gacy’s youngest victims.

He wouldn’t look at her.” Years later, Gacy’s impact lingered in Byers’ mind, prompting her to wonder how many more lives could have been saved if the evidence hadn’t surfaced when it did.

In 1995, Gacy’s story concluded with his execution by lethal injection at age 52, though the shadows of his past remain. O’Neil poignantly concluded, “My mom always remembered Rob’s love for his family. He was just a kid who had so much life ahead of him. It was all just taken away.”

As Byers reflects on her past, the haunting memories linger, echoing the pivotal lessons that arose from such a tragic narrative.
