A man from Hawaii was recently freed after spending three decades in prison for a murder he consistently denied committing. His first actions following his release included savoring a steak dinner and visiting his mother’s grave to pay his respects.
Gordon Cordeiro regained his freedom on Friday as a judge vacated his conviction, citing new DNA evidence. This pivotal evidence led to a reassessment of his role in the 1994 fatal shooting of Timothy Blaisdell on the island of Maui.
Cordeiro’s mother, Paulette, passed away in September 1994, just one month before her son’s arrest. She succumbed to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), often known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, at the young age of 49. Cordeiro, along with his sisters, took on caregiving roles during her illness.
Following his release, Cordeiro visited his mother’s grave and shared an emotional moment. “Thanks for looking over me,” he recalled saying. “Keeping me safe.” The connection between family and Cordeiro remained strong even during his years behind bars.
On the first night of his new life outside prison, Cordeiro indulged in a steak dinner at a restaurant, a simple yet profound way to celebrate his newfound freedom. He later gathered with family members at his father’s house to commemorate this significant turning point in his life. The next day included visits to other relatives’ graves and a trip to Costco, marking the start of a new chapter filled with healing and reconnection.
Adjusting to life outside prison brings a mix of emotions and observations for Cordeiro. He noted significant changes in Maui since his incarceration, specifically the tragic destruction of the historic town of Lahaina due to a wildfire in 2023.
Moreover, Cordeiro remarked on the stark difference in technology usage.
