The Washington Commanders face uncertainty as star wide receiver Terry McLaurin reportedly requested a trade. Head coach Dan Quinn addressed the situation for the first time during a press conference on Saturday.
McLaurin, who is 29 years old, has been present at training camp but has not participated in practices as he awaits a contract extension. The discussions between McLaurin and the Commanders have not aligned, adding tension to the situation.
Quinn expressed his satisfaction regarding McLaurin’s presence at training camp, despite his absence from practice.
“I’m really glad he’s here,” Quinn stated before practice sessions began. “I love coaching him, but the business side, that’s kind of where it’s at. Someone asked me if it’s a distraction. It is not.”
McLaurin’s current contract has one year remaining from a three-year, $68 million extension he signed in June 2022. He is reportedly seeking a new deal that would elevate him among the highest-paid wide receivers in the NFL.

He acknowledged the evolving landscape of player contracts, stating, “The players today are more aware of contracts and things than they used to be. They recognize that business part happens as well. For the team, we’re just rocking and going and throwing some great practices. For Terry and the trade requests, man, that’s part of normal business that’s happening around the NFL.”
Quinn reiterated his admiration for McLaurin, saying, “We love Terry. I’m really glad he is here, and hopefully, he is out practicing soon. We also understand there’s the business side of these things that (general manager) Adam (Peters) and his side and Terry and his reps are working through.”
In McLaurin’s absence from practice, other players need to step up. Wide receiver Deebo Samuel and tight end Zach Ertz are currently the primary targets for quarterback Jayden Daniels, who was recognized as the Offensive Rookie of the Year last season.
McLaurin has consistently served as the No.1 wide receiver for the Commanders throughout his six-season tenure with the team, having made the Pro Bowl twice.
