According to Michelle Routhenstein, a registered dietitian from New York specializing in heart health, consuming two or more artificially sweetened beverages daily could heighten the chances of developing heart disease and experiencing strokes.

Research findings reveal that just one diet soda can increase the likelihood of atrial fibrillation, a condition characterized by irregular heartbeats that can lead to stroke and other vascular complications.

Experts suggest that these adverse effects may stem from how the body processes artificial sweeteners and the metabolic byproducts they generate. Furthermore, some studies indicate that Diet Coke can alter the balance of gut bacteria, which plays a crucial role in chronic health issues and overall wellness.

Many individuals who have stopped drinking Diet Coke have expressed surprise at how addictive they found it, noted Routhenstein.

Tanya Freirich, a registered dietitian nutritionist based in Charlotte, North Carolina, has pointed out that the artificial sweeteners found in Diet Coke are linked to weight gain, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease risks.

Freirich has highlighted that aspartame, the primary sweetener in Diet Coke, has been classified as possibly carcinogenic by the World Health Organization. This ingredient may also adversely affect gut microbiomes, she stated during an interview.

Despite ongoing debates, numerous industry experts including those from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration affirm that aspartame remains safe for consumption.

In 2023, the FDA released a take on aspartame, clarifying its safety status: “Aspartame is one of the most studied food additives in the human food supply. FDA scientists do not have safety concerns when aspartame is used under the approved conditions. Various regulatory and scientific authorities, including Health Canada and the European Food Safety Authority, have also evaluated aspartame and consider it safe at current permitted use levels.”

Routhenstein urges individuals to consider healthier alternatives to diet sodas. While achieving the same taste and carbonation might be challenging, other options exist.

One suggestion includes low-sugar kombucha, a fermented tea rich in benefits for gut health. Freirich agrees on the advantages of kombucha, noting its probiotic content is beneficial for maintaining a balanced gut.

Individuals can also enhance seltzer water with a splash of lime or lemon, offering a dose of vitamin C that supports immune and heart health, according to Routhenstein. For those who prefer a tea-based drink, sparkling green tea presents another appealing option, combining carbonation with anti-inflammatory properties.

Freirich also encourages opting for unflavored seltzer or lightly sweetened carbonated drinks as alternatives to Diet Coke. If caffeine is a must, she recommends lightly sweetened tea or coffee as substitutes. These beverages not only provide natural antioxidants but also deliver a caffeine boost, with green tea being particularly renowned for its anti-inflammatory effects.
