Health officials are raising serious concerns about a substance commonly referred to as “gas station heroin.” The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has recommended that 7-hydroxymitragynine, or 7-OH, a byproduct of the kratom plant, be classified as a Schedule I drug.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the Secretary of Health and Human Services, along with FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary, stressed the urgency of addressing this emerging threat to public health. Dr. Makary highlighted parallels between the current situation and the onset of the opioid crisis, noting that the distribution of 7-OH resembles the initial phases of opioid prescriptions when their addictive potential was not yet fully understood.
Vape shops are quickly proliferating across America, many of which are retailers of concentrated 7-OH products. Dr. Makary warned that after the recent wave of the opioid epidemic, it is crucial for public health authorities to respond proactively. He emphasized the potency of 7-OH, stating, “7-OH is an opioid that can be more powerful than morphine. We need robust regulations and extensive public awareness campaigns to avert a repeat of the opioid catastrophe.”
At a press conference on Tuesday, Dr. Makary addressed the often slow response of health authorities in combating dangerous substances. He pointed out a prevailing disconnect between data-driven policy decisions and the realities faced on the ground, specifically questioning whether experts have visited vape shops to understand the marketplace better.
The FDA is increasingly aware of the potential for 7-OH to be misused. The substance interacts with opioid receptors, raising alarms about its addictiveness. Moreover, its availability is alarming as it comes in child-friendly forms, including fruit-flavored gummies and even ice cream cones. The FDA cautioned that products containing 7-OH often lack clear labeling regarding their content, leading to further risks.
Dr. Marc Siegel, FOX News Senior Medical Analyst, expressed strong support for the FDA’s initiative to classify 7-OH as a controlled substance. He stated, “I favor this action due to the significant relationship between 7-OH and opioid receptors. Essentially, this substance behaves like an opioid. Thus far, no approved medications or dietary supplements containing 7-OH exist.”
Kennedy shared his personal struggles with addiction during the news conference, revealing the extent of heroin’s grip. He recounted feeling invincible due to his strong willpower, which ultimately crumbled when faced with the irresistible nature of addiction. “This compulsion was impervious to my will. The availability of heroin made it too easy for me to access,” Kennedy admitted.
In discussing addiction, he also touched on the fact that former President Donald Trump’s family has dealt with substance abuse issues. While Trump has remained sober throughout his life, his brother Fred struggled with alcoholism and passed away at a young age.
Reflecting on their relationship, Trump once remarked, “I had a brother, Fred, a great guy. But he had a problem with alcohol. He would often advise me, ‘Don’t drink. Don’t drink.'” Trump’s respect for his late brother’s words guided him in his lifelong commitment to sobriety.
Senator Markwayne Mullin from Oklahoma, who attended the conference, echoed the sentiments regarding addiction’s destructive impact. He shared a personal connection to the issue but did not provide specifics. Senator Mullin thanked Kennedy for his proactive stance against the formidable substance, stating, “It’s an addiction that is ruining lives. I appreciate the effort to combat this issue on behalf of countless families.”
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported a decrease in drug overdose deaths in the United States in 2024, with 80,391 deaths recorded, representing a 26.9% drop from the previous year. Specifically, deaths involving opioids fell from an estimated 83,140 in 2023 to 54,743 in 2024.
Kratom, the source of 7-OH, is a tropical tree native to Southeast Asia. The FDA has noted that kratom is sometimes used by individuals attempting to self-medicate for various conditions, including pain, anxiety, and depression. However, the agency emphasizes that it has not sanctioned any prescription or over-the-counter products containing kratom or its active components, mitragynine and 7-OH.
