Heroic Former Officer Passes Away While Rescuing Swimmers in South Carolina

A decorated former police officer and ex-minor league baseball player tragically lost his life while saving swimmers caught in a rip current off the coast of South Carolina.

Chase Childers, aged 38, is being hailed as a hero following his attempt to rescue several swimmers in distress near Pawleys Island on July 13. While other rescuers returned to safety, Childers did not. Emergency responders found his body approximately 90 minutes after the initial rescue call was made.

Details of the Rescue Attempt

According to the Pawleys Island Police Department, Childers and another individual entered the water to assist four to five swimmers who were struggling. Tragically, Childers was also caught in the rip current and died while trying to save others. The police department confirmed these events in an official statement, highlighting the risks associated with rip currents.
