A U.S. Marine returning to the United States from Tokyo, Japan, heroically intervened during a flight when he restrained a man attempting to open the emergency exit door. Reports indicate that the incident occurred on All Nippon Air Flight 114, which was en route to Houston.
Sergeant Major Jody Armentrout, a decorated Marine with over two decades of service, was aboard the flight when he observed suspicious behavior from another passenger. According to multiple news outlets, Armentrout noticed the man repeatedly leaving and entering the airplane’s bathrooms.
In a phone interview, Armentrout detailed his observations, noting that the individual was pacing up and down the aisle, which raised his concerns. “He came out of that one and began pacing up and down the aisle, so that just threw my radar on,” the 50-year-old Marine explained.
As the suspicious passenger glanced towards the emergency exit, Armentrout sprang into action. He quickly positioned himself between the man and the exit door, prepared to act should the situation escalate further.

“He grabbed a strap around the door, pulled it off and about that time is when I took him and slammed him, put him on the ground,” Armentrout recounted. Another passenger, an older gentleman seated nearby, joined in his efforts to help restrain the man.
Flight attendants quickly responded to the unfolding crisis by handing Armentrout zip ties, which he used to secure the unruly passenger’s wrists and attach him to a seat to prevent any further attempts to disrupt the flight.

Furthermore, the FBI reported an additional disturbance during the diversion, where another passenger expressed frustration by punching a bathroom door. This second individual was subsequently removed from the flight.
