High-Dose Vitamin D Supplements Show Promise in Alleviating Multiple Sclerosis Symptoms

New Research Highlights Benefits of Vitamin D in Multiple Sclerosis

A recent study underscores the potential of high-dose vitamin D supplements in reducing the symptoms associated with multiple sclerosis (MS). Earlier research has indicated that vitamin D deficiency may elevate the risk of developing this chronic neurological condition.

Study Overview

This latest investigation included 303 adults from France who had recently experienced clinically isolated syndrome (CIS). CIS refers to the initial manifestation of neurological symptoms that may precede the onset of multiple sclerosis. Participants were recruited within 90 days of their first symptoms.

Supplementation Protocol

The research focused on two groups of participants. One group received high doses of cholecalciferol, also known as vitamin D3, at a rate of 100,000 International Units (IU) every two weeks over a period of 24 months. Meanwhile, the control group received a placebo.

Key Findings

Among participants who received the high-dose vitamin D treatment, 60.3% experienced either a relapse of symptoms or the emergence of new or enlarged lesions detected through MRI scans. In contrast, the placebo group reported a significantly higher relapse rate of 74.1%.
