High-profile Gang Leader Arrested in Virginia Amid Intensifying Immigration Debate Ahead of Elections

EXCLUSIVE: Immigration has emerged as a pivotal issue in Virginia, with residents assessing which candidates will best safeguard their communities. Recently, the Department of Homeland Security informed Fox News Digital that several notorious offenders were apprehended in the state this week.

Republican nominee Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears has positioned herself as the candidate dedicated to protecting Virginians. In contrast, former Democratic Rep. Abigail Spanberger highlights her experience as a federal agent in her responses to law-and-order queries.

The most notable arrest involves Ismael Enrique Mendoza Flores, one of El Salvador’s most wanted MS-13 leaders. This individual was also recognized as a fugitive on several international lists.

Flores, who is better known by the alias ‘El Calaco’ (meaning The Skeleton), faced serious charges in El Salvador, including aggravated homicide and membership in illicit associations. His criminal history in the United States includes a previous charge for unauthorized vehicle use.

DHS reported that Flores was taken into custody in Alexandria, backed by an active arrest warrant originating from San Salvador. Notably, he had encountered the law in Virginia before for unauthorized vehicle use.

During his questioning, Flores allegedly disclosed that he entered the United States during the previous Obama administration. This revelation coincides with DHS’s assertion that they would not allow any potential government shutdown to hinder law enforcement efforts at the border.

Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin stated, “This MS-13 gang member was wanted for murder. These types of criminal illegal aliens are being sheltered by sanctuary politicians across Virginia, who continue to vilify law enforcement officers.” She went on to assert that both President Trump and Secretary Noem remain committed to preventing gang members from instilling fear in American citizens.

McLaughlin further noted that politicians have long permitted violent foreign criminals to exploit lax border policies and victimized innocent citizens.

Broader Implications of Recent Arrests

The DHS also placed detainers on two juvenile suspects involved in a dangerous high-speed chase on northbound I-295. These youths drew attention from Hanover County police for reportedly firing weapons as they sped toward the Henrico County line.

The ongoing incident escalated when a Hanover deputy, pursuing another vehicle, spotted the fast-moving BMW. Reports indicate that the youth damaged the vehicle in a crash near the Richmond city line.

After the chase, both suspects were sent to a juvenile detention center in Williamsburg, facing multiple charges. According to McLaughlin, they had been released as unvetted migrants by the current administration. She confirmed that ICE placed an arrest detainer to assure these individuals do not return to Virginia’s streets.

Additional Arrests Reveal Ongoing Public Safety Concerns

Among those apprehended in recent operations was Rick Martinez-Lopez, a convicted pedophile from Guatemala. His criminal record in Virginia includes allegations of child sexual assault, along with failing to register as a sex offender and a probation violation.

Although Richmond’s city jail dismissed a detainer placed on Martinez-Lopez in August, ICE later managed to apprehend him. McLaughlin criticized Richmond officials, condemning the earlier decisions that allowed the predator to
