Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has issued a warning that if President Donald Trump considers seeking a third term in office despite legal restrictions, it may pave the way for other past presidents to follow suit. Her remarks highlight a growing concern over the integrity of U.S. democratic norms.
Trump recently dismissed speculations about a third presidential run during an interview on NBC’s ‘Meet the Press.’ He maintained that he is not interested in pursuing a term that is constitutionally prohibited. Nonetheless, Clinton’s commentary arises amid ongoing discussions about Trump’s intentions, especially among his loyal supporters.
Clinton, who previously served as First Lady and is married to former President Bill Clinton, participated in an extensive interview earlier this month at New York’s 92nd Street Y. Her discussion was broadly focused around her latest book, but the latter part of the conversation shifted to Trump’s potential aspirations for a third term.
During the interview with moderator Margaret Hoover, Clinton reflected on the implications of Trump’s comments regarding a possible third term. She stated, “Listen to what Trump says. He telegraphs everything. Often when he’s criticizing something, he is projecting his own actions or intentions onto others.”
Clinton emphasized the need for psychological expertise to further comprehend Trump’s behavior and motivations. She quoted a friend’s insight: psychologists and psychiatrists could prove essential in understanding the ongoing political climate.
“When he claims that people think his third term could happen, he’s indicating that there are individuals in right-wing think tanks examining ways to make it a reality,” Clinton explained. “Additionally, he has extremely dedicated supporters who believe such a scenario should occur, meaning if legal avenues are restricted, they may advocate for alternative approaches.”
In a striking moment during the interview, Clinton suggested that a potential response to Trump’s alleged ambitions could be for both Barack Obama and Bill Clinton to campaign again. This comment drew enthusiastic applause from the audience.
“I mean, take your pick! If this is the direction we’re headed, let’s give people a choice,” Clinton remarked. “It’s imperative that we do not turn a blind eye to this situation.”
