New York City has recorded unprecedented drops in both shootings and murders, according to new data released by city officials. The first five months of this year have seen the fewest incidents in history, marking a significant achievement for public safety in one of the nation’s largest metropolitan areas.
From January 1 to May 31 of this year, the city reported a total of 264 shootings and 112 homicides. In comparison, the previous low was 267 shootings in 2018 and 113 homicides recorded in both 2014 and 2017. This year, the month of May alone demonstrated historic lows with just 54 shootings and 18 homicides, surpassing last year’s figures where 61 shootings and 19 homicides were noted.
Mayor Eric Adams Champions Public Safety Initiatives
During an official statement, Mayor Eric Adams expressed pride in the city’s progress in fighting crime. He emphasized, “When I took the oath of office as mayor, I made a promise that we would make this city safer and that we would drive down crime. Today, the numbers prove that we have not just kept that promise — we have exceeded it. From January 2025 to May 2025, New York City saw the lowest number of shootings and homicides in recorded history.”
The mayor noted that these statistics translate into real-life benefits for New Yorkers, stating, “These numbers represent thousands of New Yorkers who are alive today and safer today, families who can sleep more soundly at night, and communities that are thriving because they know their city isn’t just coming back from the throes of the pandemic — it is back.” He attributed this success to precision policing, strategic resource allocation, and the unwavering dedication of the NYPD personnel.
Efforts to Reduce Illegal firearms
Adams also pointed out the significant progress made in removing illegal firearms from the streets, revealing that under his administration, about 22,000 illegal guns, including ghost guns, have been confiscated. He remarked, “Our officers have also removed over 22,000 illegal firearms from our streets, including dangerous ghost guns that have no place in our communities. This reflects our focus on upstream solutions and our unprecedented investments in our young New Yorkers, emphasizing that crime prevention begins with opportunity for the next generation. However, let’s be clear: we are not even close to done. It’s not enough for New Yorkers to be safer — they must feel safer, too.”
Police Department’s Proactive Measures
New York City Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch shared insights during an Executive Budget Hearing, confirming that more than 2,200 illegal guns have been taken off the streets just this year. She stated, “Results like this never happen by accident, especially when the state’s criminal justice laws have created a revolving door out of our justice system.”
Commissioner Tisch elaborated on the strategies implemented by the NYPD, stating, “Here’s how your mayor and your NYPD cops delivered the safest January to May for gun violence in New York City: three-plus years of relentless efforts targeting guns and a data-driven policing strategy that positions officers where they are needed most. Our summer violence reduction plan is bold and aggressive and designed to build on these historic safety gains.”
Declining Crime Rates Across the Board
Earlier this year, the NYPD reported a nearly 3% overall decline in the city’s crime index for the previous year. Sizable reductions were seen in serious crimes, including murder, robbery, burglary, grand larceny, and motor vehicle theft.
