Historic Election of First American Pope Sparks Enthusiasm on Capitol Hill

Fox News interviewed several senators on Capitol Hill Thursday to capture their reactions to the election of Pope Leo XIV, the first American-born pontiff in history. The announcement has generated considerable excitement among lawmakers, marking a significant moment for American Catholics.

Senator John Hoeven, a Republican from North Dakota, described the event as “unbelievable.”

“If you had told me this ahead of time, I would have said, ‘No way. Never happen.’ This is phenomenal,” said Hoeven, expressing his surprise and pride. “I had told many people that they would never choose an American cardinal to be pope. I expected the selection to come from Europe. Thus, this is truly exhilarating. I cannot believe it.”

The newly elected pope, born Robert Francis Prevost in Chicago in 1955, was a member of the Augustinians, a prominent religious order within the Catholic Church. He obtained his education at Villanova University before being ordained as a priest in 1982. In 2023, he received his title of cardinal from Pope Francis.

Senator Hoeven emphasized the historic significance of Pope Leo XIV’s selection, stating, “American Catholics will undoubtedly be thrilled. I know they are elated.”

Senator Mark Kelly, a Democrat from Arizona, also expressed his excitement, stating, “As an American Catholic, I am incredibly excited.”

In a lighthearted comment, Kelly referenced sports, saying, “As an Arizonan, this is probably the best pick the Cardinals have made since Larry Fitzgerald.”

Senator Tammy Duckworth, a Democrat from Illinois, shared her pride in her home state by saying, “We’re very proud in Illinois.” She expressed her hope that Pope Leo brings a sense of his hometown spirit to the Vatican.

Senator Ed Markey, a Democrat from Massachusetts, focused on the new pope’s potential influence on social issues. He previously commented on a post by Leo that seemed to criticize Vice President JD Vance for justifying stricter immigration enforcement.

Markey remarked, “Hopefully, the new pope can use his pastoral powers to help JD Vance and Donald Trump understand their responsibilities as representatives of the most powerful and wealthy nation in the world. It is essential that we protect those who are the most vulnerable and most in need.”

The senator asserted that Pope Leo XIV would uphold the legacy of Pope Francis. He believes that Leo will continue to advocate for those in need and challenge the powerful.

Despite Senator Markey’s optimistic views, Pope Leo XIV has already distinguished himself from his predecessor in several notable ways. He chose the more traditional papal name
