Historic Moment: Brother of Pope Leo XIV Expresses Pride and Responsibility

The brother of newly elected Pope Leo XIV, the first American pontiff in history, recently shared his emotional response to this monumental occasion. John Prevost revealed his overwhelming pride and the immense responsibilities that come with his brother’s new role during an interview with FOX 32.

Prevost expressed, There are no words to accurately portray his feelings for Robert Prevost, who has taken on the significant title of pope. It’s overwhelming pride, but it’s also an overwhelming responsibility, being the first American Pope from Chicago – and a relative. Frightening, he added.

A Journey from Childhood to Papacy

According to Prevost, his brother’s journey to the papacy began at a young age. After completing eighth grade, Robert entered seminary, which meant that during his high school and college years, the family had limited interactions with him outside of summer vacations.

Prevost recalled, So, the whole high school years, college years, we didn’t really know him other than the summer vacation. His brother’s commitment to the clerical life was evident early on and paved the way to his historic election.

Signs of an Imminent Papacy

Born Robert Prevost, he was widely considered a leading candidate to succeed Pope Francis following the latter’s passing last month. John said he had a feeling that his brother was in the running after hearing a radio interview mentioning two likely candidates, one of whom was a Cardinal from the Chicago area.

They were interviewing someone on the radio, and she said there are two likely candidates: One of the Cardinals from the Philippines, and one is a Cardinal, as a matter of fact, from the Chicago area. He was a missionary in Peru and now he’s a Cardinal in Rome, John recalled.

Childhood Predictions and Community Support

Prevost also reflected on childhood predictions made by neighbors who foresaw great things for Robert. As early as kindergarten, neighbors suggested that he could eventually become the first American pope.

The interesting thing is way back when he was in kindergarten or first grade, there was a parent, a mom, across the street — one across the street that way and another down the street, John shared. Both of them said he would be the first American Pope at that age. These early affirmations perhaps hinted at the future that awaited Robert.

Anticipations for Leadership

John Prevost anticipates that his brother will embody the qualities of a modern-day Pope Francis, emphasizing social issues such as poverty and social justice. He stated, I think he has a strong inclination to help the poor, the disenfranchised, the people that don’t have a voice because he spent so much time in Peru with the people who were impoverished.

Prevost also indicated that Robert might focus significantly on immigration while addressing issues related to the nation’s direction. The church has to be universal and help everyone, but some people need a lot more help … I don’t think he can do anything, but I think immigration is big time on his mind. He thinks the country’s headed in the wrong direction there, he remarked.

The Future of the Catholic Church

John Prevost acknowledged the challenges that Pope Leo XIV will face, particularly concerning the unification of the Catholic Church during a time when many have departed from the faith. He stressed the importance of reaching out to those who feel disconnected from the church.

As his brother begins this new chapter, the world watches with anticipation. The expectations for Pope Leo XIV are high, and his commitment to his faith and the community will undoubtedly shape his papacy.

A New Chapter for the Church

In summary, the election of Pope Leo XIV marks a groundbreaking moment in the history of the Catholic Church. The insights shared by his brother, John Prevost, paint a picture of a man who is not only dedicated to his religious duties but also deeply connected to his roots and the challenges of contemporary society. With a legacy to uphold, the newly elected pope is poised to inspire hope and rejuvenate faith among millions of followers worldwide.
