A SpaceX capsule successfully landed in the Pacific Ocean near Southern California on Friday, carrying four private astronauts who completed an orbit above both the north and south poles.
This mission represents the first human spaceflight to travel along a polar route and marks the first Pacific splashdown for a crewed spacecraft in the past 50 years, according to SpaceX.
The Fram2 mission, commissioned at an undisclosed cost by Bitcoin investor Chun Wang, commenced on Monday night with a launch from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. The crew returned to Earth around 9 a.m. local time on Friday.
“All four @framonauts [Fram2 astronauts] have safely exited Dragon unassisted,” SpaceX announced on X.
The capsule was designed with a domed window, allowing the crew to experience breathtaking 360-degree views of the polar regions from an altitude of 270 miles.
Rogge, one of the astronauts, shared the majestic sights with a video posted by Wang on X, stating, “It is so epic, because it is another kind of desert, so it just goes on and on and on all the way.”
Wang’s mission team included a Norwegian filmmaker, a German robotics researcher, and an Australian polar guide. This diversity in backgrounds added to the richness of the experience.
During their multi-day space mission, the crew onboard Dragon engaged in 22 research studies aimed at enhancing humanity’s capabilities for long-duration space exploration. These studies also sought to improve the understanding of human health in a microgravity environment.
The team successfully conducted groundbreaking experiments, including the first X-ray in space, while also performing exercise studies to maintain muscle and skeletal integrity. Additionally, they cultivated mushrooms in microgravity, showcasing the potential for sustainable food sources in space.
After exiting the Dragon spacecraft, the astronauts will not receive additional medical and operational support. This approach allows researchers to better evaluate the capacity of astronauts to perform unassisted tasks after varying durations in space.
The Fram2 astronauts undertook over eight months of rigorous training, which encompassed numerous simulations and emergency preparedness activities, highlighting the mission’s serious commitment to safety and success.
This mission was also a significant milestone for all four crew members, including Wang, vehicle commander Jannicke Mikkelsen, vehicle pilot Rabea Rogge, and mission specialist and medical officer Eric Philips, as it marked their debut in human spaceflight.
They aptly named their journey Fram2 after the Norwegian exploration ship that facilitated polar expeditions more than a century ago, with a piece of the original ship’s wooden deck joining them on this historic voyage.
The astronauts who returned from space on Friday became the first to make a Pacific splashdown since the three NASA astronauts involved in the Apollo-Soyuz mission in 1975.
SpaceX, founded by billionaire Elon Musk, explained that the decision to land off the California coast was influenced by established safety protocols and practical considerations.
