In a significant move, over 1,000 members of the Hollywood community, including prominent figures like Emma Stone and Mark Ruffalo, have pledged to boycott Israeli film institutions. This action follows a growing advocacy led by Film Workers for Palestine.
The pledge states that these filmmakers draw inspiration from the historical refusal of filmmakers to screen in apartheid South Africa. They commit to abstaining from screenings, appearances, or any collaboration with Israeli film institutions involved in what they describe as genocide and apartheid against the Palestinian people.
Among the notable signatories are established actors such as Peter Sarsgaard, Lily Gladstone, Olivia Colman, Susan Sarandon, and Tilda Swinton. Additionally, prominent producers including James Wilson, Robyn Slovo, and Tracey Seaward have added their names to the cause.
The pledge emphasizes responding to the appeals from Palestinian filmmakers who have urged the global film industry to refuse complicity in oppression characterized by racism and dehumanization. They call upon their counterparts in the industry to ‘do everything humanly possible’ to end the silence suppressing these issues.
In response, the Israeli Film and TV Producers Association issued a statement criticizing the signatories for targeting the wrong individuals. They argue that for decades, Israeli artists and creators have provided vital narratives that include Palestinian voices and criticisms of state policies.
The association insists that they actively collaborate with Palestinian creators to foster peace and further described the boycott call as profoundly misguided.
Mark Ruffalo’s commitment to social justice extends beyond this boycott. In past events, he has openly supported former Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 election and participated in a protest dubbed
