Homeland Security Secretary Criticizes Sanctuary Policies After Off-Duty CBP Officer Shooting in New York
On Monday, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem visited the off-duty Customs and Border Protection officer who was shot over the weekend during an attempted robbery in New York City. The incident involved a previously deported immigrant, prompting Noem to attribute blame to sanctuary policies for contributing to the attack.
The shooting occurred Saturday night in Riverside Park, Manhattan. The officer suffered injuries when he was allegedly attacked by Miguel Francisco Mora Nunez, a Dominican national arrested earlier by Border Patrol in April 2023 and later released.
Noem expressed her outrage during a press briefing, declaring, “There’s absolutely zero reason that someone who is scum of the earth like this should be running loose on the streets of New York City.” She highlighted that Nunez had been arrested multiple times in the city, stating, “Because of the mayor’s policies and sanctuary city policies, he was released back to do harm to people and to individuals living in this city.”
In addition to Nunez, Noem confirmed the arrest of a second individual involved in the attack, stating that he too would face prosecution. This accomplice was also in the country illegally.
Evidence gathered suggests that both suspects might be connected to a previous armed robbery in Leominster, Massachusetts. During that incident, which took place in February, a store owner was tied up and held at gunpoint while two firearms were stolen.
According to Homeland Security, a witness recalled the attack, describing how the victim and the officer were sitting near the water when two suspects on a scooter approached them. One of the attackers brandished a firearm, prompting the officer to draw his weapon in self-defense.
The officer sustained gunshot wounds to his right arm and left cheek. Fortunately, he remains in stable condition and is receiving medical care.
After meeting with the injured officer, Noem extended her support, stating, “We have our hearts and our prayers going out with our officer and with his family and his friends.” She emphasized the importance of his swift actions, which she commended as a reflection of excellent training and skill.
