Honduran Man Extradited to Face Charges in Deadly 2016 DUI Incident Involving Iowa Woman

A Honduran man, Eswin Mejia, who is accused of causing the death of Iowa woman Sarah Root in a 2016 drunk driving incident, has been extradited to the United States. Mejia was apprehended in Honduras and transported back to the U.S. on Friday after evading justice for years.

According to the State Department, Mejia was arrested on Thursday in Honduras. His return marks a significant moment for advocates seeking justice for Root, who was only 21 years old when she died following the crash in Omaha, Nebraska.

In a statement on social media, Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed the importance of this extradition. He stated that it has been nearly nine years since Sarah’s tragic death and that the time has come for Mejia to face justice. Rubio reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to accountability regarding individuals who evade their legal responsibilities.

Details of the Incident

The events began in January 2016 when Mejia, while allegedly driving under the influence, crashed into Root’s vehicle at a stoplight. Root was transported to the hospital but succumbed to her injuries soon after.

After being charged in connection with the fatal accident, Mejia was initially detained. However, he managed to flee the country following his release on bond, complicating efforts to hold him accountable. His name subsequently appeared on the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)
