FIRST ON FOX: The House Freedom Caucus is demanding that the House of Representatives hold a vote on the White House’s forthcoming $9.4 billion federal spending cut proposal during the same week it arrives on Capitol Hill.
The conservative group, under the leadership of Chairman Andy Harris from Maryland, is establishing its position with a clear message. This announcement comes as the White House prepares to unveil a package aimed at retracting government funding from organizations such as NPR, PBS, and the United States Agency for International Development.
The House Freedom Caucus articulated its stance on Monday, asserting that as soon as the White House submits its first rescissions package, which seeks to implement cuts within the Department of Government Efficiency, Congress should move without delay. The group emphasized the need for swift action from the House of Representatives.
In their statement, they asserted, “The House Freedom Caucus strongly supports these critical rescissions, and we will welcome additional rescissions packages the White House can propose in the near future. These initial DOGE cuts specifically target taxpayer-funded broadcasters known for their liberal bias, as well as billions spent on foreign aid deemed wasteful.”
This initiative emerges as Elon Musk concludes his role in advancing President Donald Trump’s DOGE agenda. Musk is now redirecting his attention back to Tesla and his various private enterprises. His ambitious cuts had previously generated a partisan divide within Congress.
According to the Freedom Caucus, successfully passing this package would symbolize Congress’s commitment to the DOGE initiative and Trump’s policy objectives. They warned, however, that challenges lie ahead.
“While there will inevitably be attempts from the Swamp to impede or eliminate these cuts, a Republican-controlled House has no justification for delaying the first DOGE rescissions package upon its presentation,” their statement concluded. The urgency is underscored by the necessary swift passage through the Republican Senate for President Trump to enact these measures into law.
The White House is anticipated to dispatch its $9.4 billion spending cuts proposal to Congress by Tuesday. This strategy, known as a rescissions package, serves as a mechanism for the president to retract funds previously appropriated by Congress. Once submitted, lawmakers face a window of 45 days to address the proposal, or it will become void.
Republican leaders have indicated this package represents the first of a series of similar proposals expected from the White House in the future.
Kevin Hassett, the National Economic Council Director, confirmed last week that more rescissions packages are indeed forthcoming. He expressed confidence, stating, “There will be 100% more rescissions packages coming from the White House.” To bring the first package to a House-wide vote within a week requires adept political navigation.
Under current House GOP conference rules, lawmakers must have at least 72 hours to review a bill before the chamber votes. This stipulation, championed by conservatives, potentially positions a vote for Friday or even the weekend.
The Freedom Caucus is not alone in urging rapid action. Republican Study Committee Chairman August Pfluger from Texas echoed the need for quick progress, emphasizing, “This brings fairness and accountability back to taxpayers who have grown weary of funding government waste. It also advances efforts against our burgeoning $36 trillion national debt. Congress must urgently solidify these cuts into law through rescissions and modifications in the FY26 appropriations bills.”
This development follows a recent victory for House Republicans, who successfully pushed through Trump’s multi-trillion-dollar tax and immigration bill using the budget reconciliation process. The Senate is currently reviewing this legislation, which will need to return to the House should any amendments arise.
Republican leadership aims to present the proposed tax and immigration bill on Trump’s desk before the Fourth of July break. Speaker Mike Johnson from Louisiana recently highlighted these looming deadlines during his appearance on NBC News.
He stated, “We are set to initiate a second budget reconciliation bill following this one. The appropriations process will commence next week, which encompasses the spending bills for the government. Expect substantial reflections of the DOGE cuts and this drive for fiscal restraint in our upcoming actions. Stay tuned; this is merely the beginning.”
Johnson also reiterated the collaboration between Congress and the White House, focused on establishing legislation that formalizes DOGE savings. The aim is to put an end to the misuse of taxpayer dollars, ensuring more accountability and efficiency in government spending.
As Republicans gear up for significant legislative challenges in the coming weeks, their commitment to cutting spending while advancing Trump’s policy objectives remains at the forefront of their agenda.
