EXCLUSIVE: The No. 2 Republican in the House has firmly rejected Elon Musk’s critiques of President Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful bill”. This comes as the tech entrepreneur once again voiced his concerns over the key legislation.
House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, representing Louisiana, stated that Musk’s criticism remains unfounded. In an interview with Fox News Digital on Monday, he remarked, “His criticism has been consistently off-base.” Scalise emphasized the importance of the legislation in job creation.
Scalise noted, “This is a bill that will create millions of jobs. If we look back at 2017, when we reduced rates, we witnessed a thriving job market. Millions of positions were created. We are at that crossroads again, where the economy is eager for this bill to pass.”
Despite previously moderating his stance, Musk escalated his criticisms again this week as the bill moved through the Senate. He specifically condemned the spending plan, calling out significant increases to the national debt.
Musk took to X, stating, “It is obvious with the insane spending of this bill, which increases the debt ceiling by a record five trillion dollars, that we live in a one-party country – the Porky Pig Party! It is time for a new political party that truly cares about the people.”
In response, Scalise highlighted the urgency of advancing the legislation, citing its positive implications for the economy. He asserted, “We are moving quickly to get it done because of the favorable impacts it will have on our economy.”
The Senate is anticipated to vote on the legislation sometime Wednesday, with expectations that it will return to the House for further discussion. An earlier iteration of the bill passed the House in late May with a narrow one-vote margin. Currently, both legislative chambers must reconcile their differences to ensure the bill reaches Trump’s desk by the approaching Fourth of July holiday.
Sources informed Fox News Digital that House GOP leaders still plan to convene a House Rules Committee meeting at noon on Tuesday to facilitate progress on the bill. This committee serves as the last checkpoint prior to a broader chamber vote.
This meeting could set the stage for a procedural vote as early as Wednesday morning, paving the way for final approval later in the day or on Thursday.
Scalise remarked, “I’ve always said failure’s not an option. There have been numerous instances where the bill could have faced collapse, but we maintained our focus and ensured its progress. That should remain our priority moving forward.”
Despite ongoing efforts to unify support, the Senate’s amendments to the bill have created discontent among numerous Republican factions. Both moderate and conservative members have expressed their concerns.
Moderate Republicans are apprehensive regarding measures that would shift additional Medicaid costs to states that expanded their programs under the Affordable Care Act. Concurrently, conservative Republicans have argued that the proposed cuts in some areas do not sufficiently counterbalance the increased spending found elsewhere in the legislation.
Scalise acknowledged, “We are engaging extensively with our members and closely monitoring the changes being proposed to the bill. Some modifications could help alleviate specific concerns.”
He also mentioned the internal conversations taking place, recognizing concerns from certain GOP members while highlighting that many others are eager for a bill that supports the President’s agenda.
As of early Monday evening, Scalise maintained an optimistic view regarding the legislative timeline. He stated, “The plan remains to convene members and hold votes as early as Wednesday morning.”
The legislation itself is a comprehensive 940-page document, pushing forward various aspects of Trump’s agenda, which are tied to taxes, border security, defense, energy policy, and managing the national debt.
Fox News Digital has reached out to Musk for further comments regarding his statements. The ongoing dialogue among lawmakers will be crucial as the bill progresses. Scalise is keenly aware of the stakes involved, as a successful passage could significantly impact the economic landscape.
As the legislative process unfolds, the responses from both sides reflect broader tensions within the political arena. As Elon Musk continues to critique governmental actions, the GOP navigates its own internal divides regarding support for Trump’s proposals. With so much at stake, the outcome of this bill could set a significant precedent for future legislation and economic policies.
