House Republicans Investigate Nonprofits Linked to Soros Over Alleged Antifa Financing

FIRST ON FOX — The House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, a Republican from Ohio, alongside Subcommittee on the Constitution Chairman Chip Roy, a Republican from Texas, has initiated an inquiry targeting liberal nonprofit advocacy groups. They are demanding these organizations provide documentation regarding potential support for Antifa as part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to counter left-wing radicalism.

Demand for Transparency

In letters acquired by Fox News Digital, the Republican lawmakers have called on the Alliance for Global Justice (AFGJ) and Open Society Foundations to hand over various records. These documents should include communications, financial information, and internal policies pertaining to groups like Refuse Fascism, which have been associated with Antifa. Earlier this year, President Donald Trump designated Antifa as a domestic terrorist organization.

The correspondence cites public reports suggesting that AFGJ serves as a fiscal sponsor for Antifa-affiliated organizations. It references donations made to Refuse Fascism, which was notably active in Washington, D.C., during protests commemorating the one-year anniversary of Trump’s election, as reported by the Associated Press.

Refuse Fascism’s Activities

Refuse Fascism has participated in numerous demonstrations linked to Antifa over the years. The letter emphasizes that “Antifa’s left-wing extremist violence cannot be justified.” It asserts that AFGJ holds direct responsibility for the actions carried out by its funded projects and the management of the funds raised for these initiatives.

The leadership of Refuse Fascism directed Fox News Digital to its web page, which outlines its mission and principles. They emphasized that Sunsara Taylor and other leaders have consistently advocated for nonviolence in promoting the organization’s goals.

Concerns Over Samidoun and Other Entities

In addition to analyzing Refuse Fascism, the lawmakers have expressed apprehension regarding AFGJ’s sponsorship of Samidoun. The U.S. Treasury Department has described Samidoun as a “sham charity” for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), which is recognized as a terrorist organization by the United States.

AFGJ has faced scrutiny for its alleged support of Palestinian terrorism and its involvement with the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement. Notably, financial disclosures reveal that the Alliance for Global Justice received a grant of $250,000 in 2020 from the Foundation to Promote Open Society, linked to George Soros’s philanthropic activities.

Significant Financial Transactions

This substantial contribution was earmarked to “catalyze Black communities into the global movement for climate justice,” raising further questions about the organization’s activities and their overlap with extremist ideologies.

The recent letter addressed to Open Society Foundations highlights a report from the Capital Research Center, noting that since 2016, the organization has allocated over $80 million to entities engaging in terrorism or other forms of extreme violence.

Of particular concern is the claim that over $2 million of this funding went to the Sunrise Movement. This group is reportedly linked to Antifa, having supported those involved in the violent Stop Cop City protests in Atlanta earlier this year, where demonstrators assaulted law enforcement officers and caused significant damage.

Concern for Tax-Exempt Status

The inquiry into AFGJ extends to its implication in anti-Israel protests on college campuses following Hamas’s attacks in October. As a result, Republican House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith has advocated for the revocation of the organization’s tax-exempt status by the Internal Revenue Service.

Smith’s emphasis on action stems from the ongoing political violence associated with AFGJ and other identified organizations that sow chaos in the United States, claiming ties to foreign terrorist groups.

Understanding the Broader Context

The letters demand that AFGJ and Open Society Foundations maintain and submit records dating back to January 1, 2017. This request includes information on sponsorship arrangements, grants, donations, and any documents that could indicate internal knowledge of criminal activities by the involved organizations.

Critics have long linked the network associated with Soros to Antifa’s violent actions across various cities. Recent analysis suggests this includes orchestrated efforts involving paid individuals, including the exploitation of homeless populations to incite unrest during protests.

A Closer Look at Antifa

Antifa presents itself as a far-left militant movement framed as an “antifascist” activist group. It frequently mobilizes during significant protests and riots, drawing national attention during the upheaval witnessed in 2020 following George Floyd’s death.

Despite numerous incidents of violence attributed to Antifa-linked factions, various Democrat lawmakers and liberal media commentators have increasingly claimed that Antifa does not exist. This narrative mirrors arguments made in 2020, when members of the Democrat party downplayed the reality of Antifa’s influence amid nationwide protests.

Political and Public Reactions

Democratic leaders have often dismissed Antifa’s existence, with Representative Jerry Nadler labeling it a myth. Meanwhile, public figures like Joy Behar have described Antifa as a fictitious concept, further broadening the divide in perspectives on this contentious issue.

Former FBI Director Chris Wray categorized Antifa not as a traditional organization but as a movement or ideology during his testimony in 2020, reinforcing the complexity surrounding discussions about this group.

Moving Forward: An Ongoing Debate

The ongoing investigation by House Republicans raises important questions about the interactions between advocacy groups and extremist organizations in the United States. As lawmakers seek accountability from nonprofit organizations allegedly involved in funding violence, the implications of such inquiries will resonate throughout the political landscape.

As these investigations unfold, the balance between free speech and the financial support of groups linked to violence will remain a pivotal concern for lawmakers and citizens alike.
