House Republicans Urge Trump Administration to Block Security Clearance for Zohran Mamdani

FIRST ON FOX: A coalition of House Republicans is pressing the Trump administration to deny New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani a federal security clearance.

Leading the charge, Representative Andy Biggs from Arizona, along with seven colleagues from the House Freedom Caucus, has sent a formal letter to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. In their letter, they accuse Mamdani of associating with violent movements and maintaining what they describe as radical connections, asserting that these affiliations render him unqualified for access to sensitive federal information.

The letter states, “DHS must deny Zohran Mamdani a security clearance. The federal government has a constitutional duty to defend the nation against threats both foreign and domestic.” This expresses a clear concern regarding Mamdani’s record, which the lawmakers say shows support for actions that could jeopardize national security.

“His record of radical ties, anti-American sentiment, and endorsement of violent movements make him unfit for access to classified information. Granting him clearance would be reckless and potentially endanger law enforcement officers and federal agents,” the letter further elaborates.

The lawmakers highlight Mamdani’s background, noting his co-founding of a chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine during his time at Bowdoin College. They assert that this organization has recently praised the Hamas-led attacks on Israel occurring on October 7, 2023.

Moreover, the lawmakers pointed out his previous comments, where he blamed the FBI for the radicalization of al-Qaeda figure Anwar al-Awlaki, undermining crucial counterterrorism initiatives. The letter includes assertions that Mamdani has participated in events alongside clerics who have openly called for the destruction of supporters of Israel and have lauded Hamas fighters.

They argue that allowing Mamdani a security clearance would not only empower dangerous figures but could also heighten threats against law enforcement and national security personnel.

In a related call to action, another Republican representative has demanded that Mamdani be stripped of his citizenship and deported due to what they label as an anti-Israel stance. The urgency of the situation has prompted sustained scrutiny of Mamdani’s comments and affiliations.

The lawmakers argue, “His antagonistic attitude toward immigration enforcement would pose safety risks for federal coordination and fundamentally compromise national security.” This sentiment reflects broader concerns within the GOP regarding law enforcement cooperation and the implications of Mamdani’s leadership.

While the mayor of New York City is not a federal position, it is customary for the officeholder to receive a security clearance. This clearance is vital for access to intelligence briefings concerning potential terror threats and national security issues impacting America’s largest city.

Coincidentally, the release of this letter coincides with Mamdani’s visit to Washington D.C., where he is scheduled to meet with President Donald Trump, a fellow New Yorker, for an introductory meeting following his electoral victory earlier this month.

Despite his campaign controversies, Mamdani has reportedly made efforts to moderate his public stance since winning the election. He asserts his commitment to serving all New York City residents, even as critics continue to raise alarms regarding his previous remarks about Israel and the ambiguity of his support for Hamas.

Fox News Digital has reached out to both Mamdani’s transition team and the Department of Homeland Security for additional comments on these developments.

The unfolding situation highlights the intricate dynamics at play between political affiliations, national security, and local governance. As Mamdani prepares to take office, the intense scrutiny from Republican lawmakers signals that his tenure as Mayor may not begin without significant challenges.

As the debate continues, it remains to be seen how the Trump administration will respond to the House GOP’s demands. The implications of granting a security clearance to Mamdani will undoubtedly reverberate through local and federal jurisdictions alike. Maintaining the safety and security of the nation’s citizens will be a paramount concern as this issue develops.
