Mariska Hargitay, a beloved actress known for her role as an unwavering law enforcement officer, has become synonymous with the popular television show Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Despite her fame, many continue to mispronounce her name, leading to some surprising revelations about its correct pronunciation.
During a recent appearance on Amy Poehler’s podcast, Good Hang, Hargitay confirmed that even amid her close family and friends, many struggle with her name. The proper pronunciation of her name is “Muh-rish-kuh,” a detail she felt compelled to clarify. The name Mariska itself is a Hungarian nickname derived from Maria, meaning “Little Maria.”
Hargitay elaborates, “In Hungarian, the ‘ka’ or ‘ke’ at the end of the name functions similarly to a term of endearment. The name actually pays homage to my grandmother, as I carry both Hungarian and Italian heritage.”
Despite over two decades in the spotlight, Hargitay has noticed that the mispronunciation of her name persists. She recalled an amusing incident involving her own family, highlighting the continued struggle to get it right. “Just yesterday, during a brunch with my sister, my cousin was there, and he kept calling me ‘Muh-ris-kuh,’ despite knowing me since 1994,” she shared with Poehler.
Understanding that correcting family can sometimes be awkward, Hargitay opted for a more relaxed approach, choosing to “let it go” rather than insist on the correct pronunciation. Her decision underscores the familiarity many feel towards celebrities, as well as the human tendency to get names wrong.
To alleviate confusion on the set of NBC’s hit crime drama, Hargitay has taken creative steps. She now has her name written phonetically as “Marishhhhka” to guide her colleagues. Despite this, she still receives an array of mispronunciations, including “Muh-ritz-uh,” “Mar-see-kuh,” and “Mar-kis-kuh.”
Hargitay’s experiences are not isolated. She joins a growing list of celebrities who have publicly addressed the mispronunciation of their names. Actors such as Denzel Washington and Steve Buscemi have also shared their own struggles with name pronunciation.
Washington recently clarified that his name is not pronounced “Denzell” but rather “Denzull.” Meanwhile, Buscemi humorously confessed that he remains unsure of the proper pronunciation of his own name, joking that he has settled on
