The White House recently made headlines by joining TikTok, a move many see as a necessary step toward engaging younger voters. However, simply establishing a presence on this popular platform is not sufficient. In order to win over Gen Z, the administration must adopt more comprehensive strategies that resonate deeply with this demographic.
President Trump’s momentum leading into the 2024 elections is striking. His approach to youth voters marked a significant departure from traditional Republican tactics. When he appointed me as chair of the RNC’s inaugural Youth Advisory Council, I conveyed a crucial message to party leaders. The age of reaching young voters through Sunday newspaper ads is over. My generation prefers scrolling through social media and sharing content that speaks to our experiences.
This shift in approach is evident in Trump’s utilization of emerging platforms. He harnessed the potential of long-form podcasts and launched a TikTok account that quickly became the fastest-growing on the platform. The outcomes were positive; a striking 46% of Gen Z supported Trump during the 2024 election, an increase of 10 percentage points from 2020. In states like Wisconsin, support among 18-to-29-year-olds surged from 36% to 48%. This represents a generational shift that warrants careful attention.
Despite these gains, challenges remain. With the GOP holding a narrow majority in the House, clear distinctions among young voters emerge. While young men appear more aligned with conservative values, young women are leaning towards progressive views, especially regarding pivotal issues like abortion. The message is clear: Republicans cannot ease off the efforts to engage modern youth effectively.
Moreover, young voters are influenced by a diverse range of voices. Progressive figures like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani have garnered significant attention from my peers. Many in Gen Z are considering socialism, primarily because these ideologies are more visibly represented online and on campuses. If the White House and the GOP aim to solidify their connection with Gen Z, they need to act decisively and quickly.

An essential turning point in Trump’s engagement came from his appearances on popular podcasts that feature in-depth discussions. These weren’t short segments; they offered extended, candid conversations that catered to a vast audience of potential first-time voters. Young Americans, currently grappling with high student debt and the rising cost of living, are more inclined to stream content on platforms like YouTube and Spotify. A monthly White House podcast could serve as a modern equivalent to FDR’s fireside chats, providing an unfiltered channel from the president to young voters.
Direct engagement on college campuses could prove invaluable for Trump. Universities depict the epicenter of Gen Z political culture, yet conservatives often relinquish this space to their liberal counterparts. When Trump engages in these settings—whether addressing a large crowd or participating in smaller discussions—he can draw attention and foster dialogue among students who are often eager to listen.
By initiating a tour that encompasses major universities, particularly in swing states, Trump would breathe life into conservative ideas while breaking through the noise created by traditional media outlets. Hearing directly from the president can facilitate engagement that starkly contrasts with the filtered narratives on platforms like CNN or MSNBC.
Trump’s TikTok account achieved remarkable growth, but it must transition beyond a campaign tool into a constant channel for outreach. TikTok is where young adults, including many potential voters, spend their time. The White House can create authentic, relatable content that showcases the human side of the presidency, ranging from behind-the-scenes clips to insightful policy breakdowns. By embracing the platform’s emphasis on genuine interactions, the administration could reach audiences that may overlook traditional media.
To thrive in today’s political landscape, the GOP must recognize that Gen Z is not a lost cause. In fact, a growing number of young voters are drifting towards conservative ideologies. However, capturing their support demands consistent effort and a willingness to engage on their terms. Joining TikTok was a positive first step, but it should be just the beginning.
A strategic combination of a monthly podcast, a proactive campus outreach initiative, and a robust TikTok presence can effectively signal that this administration is not merely communicating with young people but is actively engaging with them. If Trump and the GOP implement these strategies, they can not only retain their young supporters but also convert those who might otherwise drift toward alternative voices in the political arena.
By understanding and addressing the unique needs and preferences of Gen Z, the Republican Party can reshape its image and secure a foothold with the youngest generation of voters. With a calculated approach focusing on accessibility and authenticity, a conservative resurgence among Gen Z is not only possible—it is within reach.
